About the Diocese
The Archdeacons

What is an Archdeacon?

Whereas a Bishop is in the tradition of Apostles - pastor, teacher and evangelist (see The role of a Bishop) an Archdeacon is in the tradition of Acts 6 in the New Testament of the Bible, where seven 'deacons' were appointed "full of the Spirit and of wisdom."

> An Archdeacon assists the Bishop and frees him for his specific tasks.
> He/she has responsibility for worship, mission (communicating the Christian message) and particular care for the clergy and church communities.
> The Archdeacon holds a brief for the Bishop in the business life and policy making committees of the diocese. He/she is therefore generally occupied in practical and legal matters such as parish boundaries, diocesan finance, clergy housing, reordering of church interiors but as an experienced priest.
> He/she brings knowledge of local situations and knows the mind of the Bishop bringing both aspects to the committees.
> Archdeacons are well placed to work collaboratively with parish leadership teams; with the parish priest, churchwardens and the Parochial Church Council (the local elected body).
> Archdeacons worship across their designated areas (archdeaconries) on Sundays giving them a wonderful opportunity to work and relate as a priest across the archdeaconry, enjoying the privilege of being the same person worshipping and preaching in the parish one day and working next day with the Parochial Church Council about the building, the churchyard, or other local concerns.
> At the induction service of a new parish priest the Archdeacon is charged by the Bishop to give him or her responsibility for the property of the parish and "to defend him/her so inducted" or to be his or her advocate.

In the Diocese of Derby, there are two Archdeacons:-

The Archdeacon of Derby,
The Venerable Dr Christopher Cunliffe

The Ven Dr Christopher and Helen CunliffeChristopher Cunliffe was installed as Archdeacon of Derby on Saturday 29th April 2006.

Christopher began his ordained ministry in the Diocese of Derby when he was Assistant Curate at St Mary and All Saints Church in Chesterfield (the famous Crooked Spire) from 1983-1985. He worked alongside his wife who was also a Curate at the church in one of the first job-share arrangements in the Church of England.

In 1985 he became Chaplain of Lincoln College, Oxford, until 1989, when he became Chaplain of the City University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. In 1991 he took a post in the Church of England's Advisory Board of Ministry, Westminster, which involved co-ordinating vocation and selection conferences for people seeking ordination. From 1997-2003 he was Director of Ministry in the Diocese of London and has been Chaplain to the Bishop of Bradwell in the Diocese of Chelmsford since 2004.

Christopher's wife, Helen, is currently an Archdeacon in the Diocese of St Albans and the couple are the first husband and wife Archdeacons in the Church of England. They have two grown-up children, Edward and Jacob. Christopher is a keen historian, with a doctorate in the subject and a continuing interest in research and writing. He also has an interest in African history and culture, stimulated by recent visits there. To relax, he enjoys reading fiction and poetry, listening to music, and watching sport.

The Archdeacon of Chesterfield designate
The Revd Christine Wilson

The Revd Christine Wilson As the announcement of the new Archdeacon is announced, she writes:

"It is a great privilege to be invited to become the new archdeacon of Chesterfield and a somewhat daunting prospect to be on the move yet again. I took up my present post as Vicar of Goring-by-Sea only last November!

"Goring is a comfortable suburb of Worthing. It is a busy and fairly demanding parish with two Church Schools, two churches and multiple congregations attending a wide range of worship from BCP through to multi-media.

"It is a far cry from my previous parish which was situated in the heart of Brighton and Hove in an area that had wonderful regency facades hiding a surprising level of deprivation, mental health problems and isolation. The clue was in counting the number of doorbells fronting each property. During my time in Hove I supported a number of community development projects and was Chair of a thriving Community Centre.

"My Title Parish was a large United Benefice of three semi-rural parishes nestling at the foot of the Sussex Downs.

"I have had a number of other responsibilities during my ministry in Chichester diocese. A particular area is in ministerial formation. I have worked as a Vocations Consultant since 2002 and more recently was appointed an education selector for Bishops Advisory Panels for the national church and locally for Reader selection. I am a peer reviewer for our clergy assisted review of ministry and also trained as a Spiritual Director back in 1999.

"One of the most formative opportunities has been through our partnership in the Gospel with our link dioceses in West Africa and Kenya. Through mutual visits I have learnt a great deal about valuing diversity and I share their passion for mission.

"I am married to Alan who commutes to London every day to work as Head of Compliance for a Japanese Bank. We have three adult daughters and one lively grandson.

"My main hobby is growing organic vegetables and I am already eyeing up a corner of the vicarage garden at Baslow for cultivation!"
