Derbyshire Churches/Church of North India Partnership

The Church of North India (www.cnisynod.org) is comprised of 26 dioceses covering the northern states of India. It was formed in 1970 as a union of six denominations including Anglican, Methodist, Reformed and Baptist Churches.

Derbyshire Churches have been in partnership with the CNI since 1977, so we are old friends. There have been a number of exchanges - in 1989 and ten years later in 1999, people from Derbyshire went to North India, and there was a two-way exchange of young people in 1992 and 1993. There have been a variety of visits of Indian pastors, bishops and lay people here.

The partnership is a Local Ecumenical Partnership under the sponsorship of Christians Together in Derbyshire and enjoys the active participation of the Anglican, Baptist, Methodist and URC Churches.

The partnership has several mutual benefits:-


> Enabling of two-way mission work.
> Gives realisation to the worldwide nature of the Church through relationship-building with people from another culture.
>

Finance - where a particular project is in need, finance is channelled through one of the recognised mission or aid agencies. For example, following the devastating earthquake in Gujarat in 2000, around £26,000 was sent by Derbyshire churches, and the devastating effects of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami will require ongoing financial aid for many years to come.
> A person who has visited India enthuses a congregation. A congregation which hosts Indian Christian visitors is enriched.
> Opportunities for visits, sabbaticals etc..
> Opportunities for developing close local links with a particular diocese: The Allestree-Nagpur link is the most long-standing.
