Derby Diocese Affirming
Catholicism Pilgrimage to St Albans
Sat 21 June |
A coach leaves front of Derby Cathedral 7.30am and arrives
back by 8.30pm
Another pick up point (07.45) at St. John’s,
Mickleover (good parking)
Last year at this annual event over 5000 people made their
pilgrimage to the Cathedral and Abbey Church of Saint Alban.
As the first British martyr, Alban’s shrine is becoming
a national and international centre of pilgrimage. Alban is
a model of integrity and courageous witness for all Christians
today. We need to be reminded of Alban’s story and example,
and the renewed inspiration and vision that the pilgrimage
offers.
It is a day for the young and old; those of us who
are or remain children and those of us who are ‘grown
up’ adults. Pageantry begins the day with a procession
for all from the Verulamium (actual Roman site of Alban’s
trial) and the route taken by Alban through magnificent parkland
(where the trees are ‘specially’ decorated), across
the river Ver, and up to the Abbey steps where the enactment
of the drama of execution in front of the Cathedral takes place;
with huge puppets of the leading characters, supported by hundreds
of costumed children.
It is not only a stunning spectacle;
it is a profoundly moving experience. All priests, men and
women, and all who have come to this festival are invited
into the Abbey to join in the concelebrating of the Eucharist.
This
year the Bishop of Reading, Stephen Cottrell, is preacher
at Evensong in the afternoon, and the principal celebrant at
the
Eucharist will be Bishop Christopher and the preacher the
Revd Angela Tilby.
