Church in Action
... in Parishes throughout
the Diocese
Both Pentecost and Chesterfield
were seen to be on a ‘world
map’ at an event marking Pentecost Saturday – the latest
stage in Hope4Chesterfield’s celebrations of the year 2008.
A huge world map was the backcloth, along with flags and balloons.
Traidcraft
and Fairtrade, Amnesty International and international relief agency
Samaritan’s Purse were there, along with personal,
denominational and ecumenical stallholders, and mission partners
and twinning representatives. Fairly traded refreshments were from
local ethnic food suppliers.
There were speakers, music, a collection
of national dolls, and the whole event closed with a short recital
by the choir of the New Testament Church of God.

The young people of the youth group TV2R (Teenagers Venture to
Revolution) held their first worship evening on Sunday 20th April,
with home-made cakes, tea, coffee and soft drinks, followed by
music, singing and time for reflection. The event went very well.
Guest musicians Philippa Hanna and Andy Baker helped to launch
this first evening and TV2R hopes a similar event will take place
on each 3rd Sunday evening.
The ‘Cathedral of the Peak’ was surrounded by fun
on the early May Bank Holiday. In the year of Hope 2008, opportunity
was taken for the church to serve the community, offering a free
fun day with human table football inflatable, bouncy castle, giant
games, bran tub, coconut shy, not forgetting arts and crafts, under
5s play area and face painting. Two local groups (Philippa Hanna & Andy
Baker and Return to Red) provided entertainment. The MU looked
after the cakes and refreshments, and a BBQ provided sustenance
later in the evening.
With the help of a grant of £5,600 from the Local Network
Fund of the Community Foundation, church members in Tideswell have
refurbished an old stone shed as a drop-in facility for local young
people. The bid included money for an outing, as one of the targets
was to take them out as a group, and the rest of the money was
to refurbish ‘The Shed,’ as it became known, and to
buy some equipment for inside. A trip to 'Go Ape' took place in
December, and The Shed opened in April. A BBQ helped the evening
get off to a good start, with opportunity afterwards to try out
some of the new facilities.

One of the aims of Hope08 Belper is to get young people involved
in acts of kindness and practical service which make a difference
to the community. Litter-picks are a simple, but effective means
of doing this. On a blustery Saturday in March around 30 young
people aged 11-18 gathered for a game of rounders before being
provided with bags, pincers and gloves to tackle the town.
In
all, 20 black bin bags were filled by the young people before
they met up at the Leisure Centre for chips. A prize was awarded
for the most litter collected. As one collected commented: “A
fun and eco-friendly way to serve the local community.”
