About the Diocese
Work with other denominations

There are currently about two dozen ecumenical partnerships throughout Derbyshire. They involve a variety of churches and traditions. In some, the Church of England works in partnership with one or more of the Free Church traditions, while in others there may be two or more Free Churches (like the Methodist Church and the United Reformed Church) working together.

There are newly planted churches like the ones in Oakwood and Littleover (Haven). There are older churches where two or more congregations have come together to work as one, as in Burton upon Trent and Matlock. The Chaplaincy that serves the University of Derby is another partnership, as is the Derby Asian Christian Ministry Project in the Pear Tree district of Derby.

Derby Christians greatly value their link with Christians in the Church of North India, and regularly arrange exchange visits. Local churches are also much involved with local industry through the ecumenical partnership that is "Industrial Mission in Derbyshire". They are all supported by the Council and members of Churches Together in Derbyshire.

What does Churches Together in Derbyshire do?
Its purpose is to support and encourage all kinds of ecumenical activity within the county of Derbyshire by:

  • Responding to social issues
  • Encouraging local mission
  • Encouraging local co-operation
  • Encouraging dialogue between communities
  • Guiding local partnerships
  • Supporting local "Churches Together" groups
  • Sponsoring local chaplaincies
  • Resourcing united local studies
  • Supporting new churches

Churches Together in Derbyshire (CTD) unites those churches in Derbyshire which, acknowledging God's revelation in Christ, confess the Lord Jesus Christ as God and Saviour according to the Scriptures; and in obedience to God's will and in the power of the Holy Spirit, commit themselves to seek a deepening of their communion with Christ and with one another in the Church which is His Body, and to fulfil their mission to proclaim the Gospel by common witness and service in the world, to the Glory of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Churches Together in Derbyshire is supported by many Christian traditions including:

  • The Baptist Union
  • The Church of England
  • The Congregational Federation
  • The Full Gospel Revival Church
  • The Methodist Church
  • The Moravian Church
  • The Roman Catholic Church
  • The Salvation Army
  • The United Reformed Church
  • And, we hope, by you!

How can you help?

  • Pray regularly for the Unity of the Church and the work of CTD.
  • Learn more about the possibilities for ecumenical co-operation such as Local Ecumenical Partnerships (LEPs), Local Covenants, Chaplaincies to hospitals, prisons, colleges, universities and industry, Mission Partnerships and Shared Buildings.
  • Inform CTD about possibilities for local ecumenical development near you so that the knowledge and experience of others can be available for you.
