Church growth and outreach top agenda

Church growth, outreach and the means of achieving them topped the bill at Saturday’s meeting of the Derby Diocesan Synod at Masson Mill, Matlock Bath.
Bishops, clergy and laity heard the Bishop of Derby, Dr Alastair Redfern, talk about the importance of vocation in mission [see separate release].
Former Patent Attorney to be ordained

John Overton, a former patent attorney is to be ordained by the Bishop of Repton, Humphrey Southern, at a service in Derby Cathedral on Sunday 1 July (10.45am). He will serve his curacy as a self-supporting (non-stipendiary) minister in the Parish of St. George’s, New Mills.

Education, mission and dialogue are some of the main themes on the agenda for the Derby Diocesan Synod this weekend (12 May 10am-3.30pm) as bishops, clergy and laity from communities across Derbyshire gather at Masson Mill, Matlock Bath.
Blessing of the Wells

Thousands of tourists will gather in and around St Mary’s Church, Tissington on Ascension Day (17 May,11am) for the annual blessing of the wells service.
The Guest Preacher this year is Canon Andy Broom, Director of Mission and Ministry in the Diocese of Derby.

The Diocese of Derby’s Mission and Ministry Team is undergoing changes this week which will see each archdeaconry have its own Church Growth Officer.
Revd Lee Townend is moving to the Diocese to work in the Chesterfield Archdeaconry and Maureen Cole (Church Growth Officer) will concentrate on the south of the Diocese.
