Evangelists’ College 10th anniversary

(04/06/2009)

The Rev’d Tim Sumpter reports on his visit and talk with the Archbishop of York.

Tim Sumpter with the Archbishop of York2009 marks 10 years since the founding of the College of Evangelists at Church House Westminster by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York. The College of Evangelists exists to recognise and affirm evangelists whose ministry is beyond the confines of any diocese.

Currently Derby diocese has one member of the College, The Rev Tim Sumpter, Vicar of Ockbrook with Borrowash. Tim was commissioned into the College at Leicester cathedral two years ago, with the support and blessing of Bishop Alastair. Over the last two years Tim has fulfilled evangelistic engagements in Brazil, the Diocese of Peterborough, Bath and Wells and Southwell, as well has occasionally helping Derby Diocesan Mission Advisor, Rev Lakshmi Jeffreys.

Tim Sumpter with the Archbishop of YorkOn May 24th Tim was invited to attend the celebrations marking the 10th Anniversary of the College in York Minster. Following a time of study and lunch, the college gathered for a commissioning service at which The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu preached. He reminded those present that as we seek to share the gospel we should be encouraged because:

  • The ascended Lord Jesus is praying for us.
  • The power of the Holy Spirit is working in and through us.
  • It isn't the Church which has a mission in the world, but the missionary God who has a Church in the world - it is His work.

Following the service Tim had an opportunity to talk with Dr Sentamu who sent his prayers and best wishes to all who labour for the gospel in Derby Diocese.
