Death of Bishop Stephen Verney announced

The Bishop of Repton, Humphrey Southern, today paid tribute to one of his predecessors, Bishop Stephen Verney, who died on Monday, aged 90, in Oxford.

Bishop Verney was Bishop of Repton between 1977-1983

 

Bishop Southern said today: "Bishop Stephen is fondly remembered by generations of Derby clergy for his ministry in this Diocese, and especially as an inspirational training director".

 

Before coming to the Diocese of Derby, Bishop Verney was a Canon of Coventry and of Windsor following a parish ministry mostly in the diocese of Coventry.

 

Bishop Stephen Verney (left) and Cyril BowlesHe was the author of several books, of which his introduction to the Gospel of John - Water into Wine (1985) - is one of the most loved and admired.

 

The Bishop of Derby, Dr Alastair Redfern, said today that he joined Bishop Southern and many others in the Diocese in offering prayers of thanksgiving for Bishop Stephen's life and ministry.
