World Development Conferences
In past years the Diocese of Derby has organised
an annual morning conference on a topical world issue. In June
2008 the conference was on the theme of the Millennium Development
Goals, which are a set of world targets for poverty alleviation,
health, education, gender equality, environment etc. John Hammock
gave the first keynote address, as chair of the board of Episcopalians
for Global Reconciliation, which describes itself as a ‘grassroots
movement of connection and collaboration to seek and serve Christ
in the extreme poor around the world’. The second address
was given by Ronelle Burger, a postgraduate student from South
Africa who is doing research in economics at Nottingham University.
Ronelle described the South African post-apartheid Reconstruction
and Redevelopment Programme, and the role of the churches in this.
More information about the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs),
can be found at the World Bank’s online
MDGs atlas, and the
website of Micah Challenge, a Christian organisation which encourages
churches to pray and take action in support of the MDGs
