Who needs to have Safeguarding training? / Book a course

In short, everyone who works for and volunteers for the Diocese of Derby needs some level of training.

This includes all clergy, readers, PtOs, church officers, PCC members, Derby Church House Staff, Deanery Administrators, parish officials, church volunteers and, of course, Parish Safeguarding Officers and Deanery Safeguarding Officers.

The training is divided into Core and Specialist Modules. The Derby Diocese Safeguarding Training Matrix July 2021 shows which training is required and which is recommended for a variety of roles and can be downloaded here for reference. This is subject to regular change as the National Safeguarding Team and the House of Bishops respond to recent reports and implement changes.

The five modules which are most usually needed and are listed below. Some of these are available online or delivered within the Diocese through ‘Zoom’ sessions. We are currently not able to deliver any Safeguarding training in ‘face-to-face’ sessions.

Parish Safeguarding Officers should also see the Resources for Parish Safeguarding Officers page which lists specific training which is applicable only to thier role or that of DBS Administrators.

Basic Safeguarding Awareness

Everyone who has contact with the public, whether face-to-face or on the phone should complete the Basic Safeguarding Awareness training. The Basic Awareness course can be completed by any member of the congregation, to support awareness raising and a culture of support and vigilance in the Church. This is a pre-requisite module for completing any other core training module. This is self-directed learning available online via the Church of England Safeguarding Training Portal.

Safeguarding Foundation

Those who hold responsibility for the safeguarding of others within church settings and activities must complete the Safeguarding Foundation training. The Basic Awareness course can be completed by any member of the congregation, to support awareness raising and a culture of support and vigilance in the Church. This is a pre-requisite for completing Leadership training for clergy, readers, churchwardens, and others in leadership roles. This is self-directed learning available online via the Church of England Safeguarding Training Portal.

We are currently unable to deliver this around the diocese face-to-face. Once we can meet in person to deliver training again there will be a limited number of Foundation sessions offered for those unable to access on-line sessions.  If you have parishoners who cannot complete online training please email judie.fogarty@derby.anglican.org detailing the number of people and the parish name and location so we can add this infomation to a wating list of those requireing face to face training.

Safeguarding Leadership

The Leadership module replaces the old C2 and C3 training, and is a requirement for all those who have any leadership responsibility in the church. All those with Bishop’s licence (Clergy, readers and Lay Ministers), Churchwardens, and many others who hold positions of leadership in work with children, young people or adults who may be at risk or are vulnerable must complete this course. There is no bar to others completing this who don’t ‘qualify’, as increased awareness at this level helps to communicate the importance of safeguarding within the church community.

The Leadership module is a mixture of reading and preparation work, two ‘Zoom’ sessions, and some Review and Evaluation work.
