The Bishop of Derby, Dr Alastair Redfern, spoke in a debate in the House of Lords on women's safety this week (12th February).

 

The Bishop of Derby highlighted the dangers of a culture which promoted self-expression, particularly in private spaces, which encouraged highly organised grooming and abuse of young people.

 

The General Synod meets in York on 5th - 9th July for the first time since the rejection of the draft legislation on Women Bishops last November.  A large period of time on the Saturday will be devoted to work on this issue with a debate on the Monday.  The Friday afternoon will see the first Presidential Address by the new Archbishop of Canterbury, which will be an opportunity for him to outline the main challenges facing the Church of England over the coming period. 

Norman William Shaw is to be ordained deacon by the Bishop of Derby, Alastair Redfern, on Sunday 30th June (10.45am) at Derby Cathedral. He will subsequently be taking on the role of assistant curate at Glossop Parish Church of All Saints. 

 

Patrick John Douglas, a former youth worker, is to be ordained deacon by the Bishop of Derby, Alastair Redfern, on Sunday 30th June (10.45am) at Derby Cathedral. He will subsequently be taking on the role of Pioneer Curate in Walbrook Epiphany Team Ministry.

 

 

Angela Plummer, a former florist, is to be ordained deacon by the Bishop of Derby, Alastair Redfern, on Sunday 30th June (10.45am) at Derby Cathedral. She will subsequently be taking on the role of Assistant curate at St Michael with St Mary, Melbourne.

 

Pippa Rowen from Duffield will be joining thousands of people in a mass rally in Belfast on Saturday 15 June, calling on world leaders to act on global hunger.

 

 

The Archbishop of Cape Town, the Most Revd Thabo Makgoba, the chair of the Anglican Communion Environment Network (ACEN), is encouraging the 85 million Anglicans in 38 Provinces to use new ACEN prayers and resources from South Africa and England in church services on or around Environment Sunday (2nd June) and World Environment Day (5th June). The Diocese of Derby is launching a new, cost effective and innovative tourism toolkit and signage pack that will allow churches to engage with visitors and tourists throughout Derbyshire.

 

The Faith in Enterprise Award Fund was launched today at the Houses of Parliament by Eric Pickles MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

 

 

The diocese has recently participated research which the national Church is conducting to identify the health, and otherwise, of Fresh Expressions. George Lings, from the Church Army Research Unit, contacted all those who had described themselves as having a Fresh Expression in their 2012 Annual Returns. In conversation, he explored whether their mission initiative might be considered a genuine Fresh Expression of Church and has highlighted for us the various opportunities and issues which were revealed.
