Our most recent Church Schools’ Celebration happened on the 4th November 2019.

We were delighted to be joined by Bishop Libby and to have a group of pupils from Mapperley CE Primary, St Laurence CE Primary and St John’s Belper CE Primary helping us in the opening session in singing a couple of PopUK songs.

Along with a choice of 18 workshops and a resources market place, we celebrated with bunting made by attending schools, chocolate and a raffle!

The latter was very generously contributed to by many of the market place stall holders such as a year’s subscription to REtoday and also Fishy Music.

Thank you to them and all those who contributed in many ways to make the day such a joyful celebration.

In the academic year 2017/18, we started having a shared Christian value across our schools. We have taken a different focus for each year from the Church of England Vision for Education – Deeply Christian, Serving the Common Good. In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic meant that nominations and presentations had a different feel to them - and you can see details of one of the presentations made, as a Year 6 pupil became the first to receive a Bishop's Badge Schools Award online.

It is about setting a framework for children as they learn, which enables them to be confident when faced with the vast challenges that our rapidly changing culture brings to us." Welcome to church schools in the Diocese of Derby.

There are 111 Church Schools in the Diocese who work very hard to provide the best possible education for the pupils in their care based on the Christian principle that Every Child Matters to God.

The schools are supported by the Board of Education whose vision is "to offer our children and young people life in all of its fullness".

Here you’ll find a wealth of information provided by the Derby Diocesan Board of Education to support school headteachers, teachers and school governors.

The Church of England has set out a clear vision for education (Deeply Christian, Serving the Common Good) in which it states:

"There are fundamental reasons, rooted the Bible, which have motivated centuries of Christian involvement in schooling hates country and around the world. The God of all creation is concerned with everything related to education…  Our vision encompasses the spiritual, physical, intellectual, emotional moral and social development of children and young people. We offer a vision of human flourishing for all, one that embraces excellence and academic rigour, but sets them in a wider framework. This is worked out theologically and educationally through four basic elements which permeate our vision for education: Wisdom; Hope; Community and Dignity."

Three reasons to choose a church school

Church of England schools are highly effective

Ofsted judges 87% of our schools to be Outstanding or Good and 95% are judged Outstanding or Good in their SIAMS inspections.

Church of England schools are diverse

In Derbyshire, they include:

• Schools in both predominantly urban areas, and predominantly rural areas
• Schools which consistently appear in the list of England’s highest performing schools
• Schools which serve the needs of children who live in some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the county
• Schools which serve children of all faiths and none (including some primary schools with an almost exclusively Muslim population)

Church of England schools have a distinctive identity and ethos, popular with parents and families, where the development of social, spiritual and emotional intelligence is as important as academic achievement.

They are disinctive in their leadership and management, their religious education and collective worship.
