They are conditions on which the faculty (permission to carry out the work) is granted, subject to any specific direction in the faculty. These directions do NOT APPLY to works the PURPOSE of which is: the exhumation of human remains from a specific grave or particular area whether for re-burial in the same or a different place nor, the opening of a grave so as to examine a body, or remove samples or items from a body A copy of these directions must be provided to a responsible person acting on behalf of any contractor employed for the carrying out of the work and, insofar as they require action by the contractor, made a term of any contract The route of any trench or excavation must be determined in conjunction with the architect, or parish priest or other person apparently acting on behalf of the parish, and must seek as far as possible to avoid any route where human remains may be disturbed. Any digging must be only to the minimum depth necessary to comply with any requirements of the utility provider or specific statutory provision. If any remains are disturbed, then: Work shall cease forthwith in the area in question Immediate steps must be taken to inform the parish priest The parish priest must inform the Registrar, the Archdeacon and Environmental Health Officer and seek their directions Subject thereto, any remains disturbed are to be reverently and decently re-interred as soon as practicable During any period of delay until a decision is made as to their disposal and that decision is put into effect, any remains shall be kept privately and securely Where it is thought that remains are from more than one burial, efforts shall be made to keep and re-inter them separately The place of any re-interment is to be marked on the churchyard plan. Where it is suggested that a Home Office licence under Section 25 of the Burial Act 1857 is necessary, the advice of the Registrar should be sought. John W.
