Christmas Lunch on Jesus 2018

Press release issued 19 December 2018

Christmas Lunch on Jesus will provide meals for 1,500 around Derby

Scores of volunteers will help out at St. Peter’s Church in Derby on Saturday, 22 December for Christmas Lunch on Jesus – a project that provides low-income families and individuals with a Christmas meal.

Now in its eighth year, Christmas Lunch on Jesus, provides hampers containing turkey, vegetables, potatoes, gravy, Christmas pudding, and other goodies - everything you need for an enjoyable Christmas lunch.

Each box also contains a candle and an invite to Christmas services in Derby.

During the day, more than 100 volunteers will help to pack 350 hampers which will ultimately feed around 1,500 people.  And from mid-morning, volunteers will distribute the hampers to people in Derby and surrounding areas who have been nominated by Social Services, GPs, housing associations, women’s refuges, charities and other organisations.

Those who deliver the boxes come back with stories of people grateful for the generosity of all those involved.

The project costs in the region of £15,000 and is financed through donations from businesses, churches, local trusts and individual giving.

The Revd Anita Matthews from St Peter’s said: “For some people, Christmas Lunch on Jesus has become a part of their own Christmas as both volunteers and donors help us out year after year.

“All of them have a real sense of having helped someone else enjoy a Christmas meal as they sit down for their own.”

Among those helping with the packing this year will be the Bishop of Repton and Acting Bishop of Derby, the Rt Revd Jan McFarlane.

Bishop Jan said: “Christmas is a time when we give generously in imitation of the God who gives to generously to us. That’s why the Christmas Lunch on Jesus initiative is so inspiring.

“Those who have plenty give to those who have less, so that together we can celebrate Christ’s birth on Christmas Day. I’m delighted to be playing a tiny part by helping to pack some of the hampers.”
