These stand-alone training sessions are aimed at:
- People who have completed the initial Pastoral Care training led by Joy Bates and are interested to know more about a given subject(s).
- licensed clergy and laity in Derby Diocese and other Derbyshire churches especially people with responsibility for pastoral care.
- These courses may also be of interest to people who work for the church in a community setting e.g. community cafe, children and families’ worker, youth worker, friendship group leader etc.
5th March Pastoral Care and Older people, Derby Church House 7.30pm

In this session we will explore some of the significant spiritual aspects of ageing, and look at ways in which the Church can both honour the gifts and contribution of older people, as well as support those who are no longer able to be as active in their participation as once they were.
Keith Albans is a Methodist Minister who has served as Director of Chaplaincy & Spirituality for Methodist Homes for the Aged since 2001.
19th March Pastoral Care and Families, Derby Church House 7.30pm
Led by Julian Hodgson and Stella Collishaw
A session designed to explore a variety of issues that present in the pastoral care of families. Based in one detailed case study we will consider how to work well with complex families.
Delegates will be required to join in group discussions and exercises surrounding the case study. Delegates are asked to bring a copy of their parish/church Safeguarding policy to refer to and share in small groups.
Julian is the Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser; Stella is the Diocesan Community Action Officer in the Mission and Ministry Team. Both are qualified and experienced social workers (Children and Families, Probation) with significant experience of working with churches in Derbyshire.

In this session you will develop an understanding of loss and bereavement, how this may impact on belief systems and how you as carers may be affected yourself and most useful to others.
Joy Bates (Master of Education Counselling) was until recently a Diocesan Community Action Officer in the Mission and Ministry Team. Previously teaching at Derby University in the Religious Studies Department on the Pastoral Studies MA and volunteering for CRUSE Bereavement Care as Counsellor, Trainer and Supervisor.
30 April Pastoral Care and Mental Health, Buxton Methodist Church,

This session comes out of the Pastoral Care course and an initiative from the Diocesan Mental Health Steering Group. The latter aim at identifying licensed workers with expertise in mental health and offering that expertise to trained licensed people in their locality. It would be an intention to repeat this course with other leaders in other locations.
This course will give some basic understanding of issues of mental health and explore details through group work and a case study.
Felicity used to be an Advocacy Worker for people with mental health problems before ordination, working with what was then the National Schizophrenia Fellowship, now called Rethink.
