New for 2020: Seriously Messy - Helping Families as they Cope with Death

Tue 28 Apr 7pm-9pm, Holy Trinity, Mapperley

And for us this is the end of all the stories, and we can most truly say that they all lived happily ever after. But for them it was only the beginning of the real story. All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on for ever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.” C.S. Lewis, The Last Battle.

Death is inevitable, and these joyful words from “The Last Battle” are full of hope. Yet we know that death often doesn’t feel like this. There is pain and bewilderment, especially for children. Whether death has been very sudden or illness has caused a long goodbye, we need to be prepared to offer what help we can. Perhaps the hardest is the death of a child with the support needed for the community in such a case. We will use a range of resources which can be bought or downloaded.

These sessions are open to all, but booking is essential.

New for 2020: Unexpected Child in the Church Area!

Tue 12 May 10am -12pm, St Peter, Hartshorne

Tue 19 May 7pm -9pm, Church Centre, Eyam

Just as when you’re quickly pushing your shopping through the checkout and the machine suddenly announces that something has gone wrong, the appearance of a child, or several children, in your usually calm and quiet service can fill many congregation members with a feeling of sudden anxiety.

• We look at how you can be prepared for this and what resources would be useful to offer some spiritual input for a range of ages and interests.

• We’ll consider how much our own expectations and experience of children and their behaviour might affect the welcome we feel able to give.

• We look at ways of supporting carers/parents and involving children in the centre of worship as we seek to welcome them as Jesus did.

New for 2020: Parenting for Faith

Mon 15 Jun 7pm-9pm, Saint Augustine, Derby

Mon 21 Sep 7pm-9pm, Saints Centre, Chesterfield - BOOK NOW

The "Faith in our Families" report has some worrying statistics. For example, 'Only 36% of parents surveyed said that they felt "very confident" in nurturing their child's faith. 70% of church leaders said that they would like some ideas to help parents see the importance of nurturing faith at home', and perhaps more telling, '92% felt they should be doing more.'

  • We will explore reports in this area and discover where there is scope to help nurture faith at home.
  • We will look at resources which are available and consider how effective they are, not simply as a task to occupy, but as a means of spiritual growth.
  • We will explore some realities of family life today and plan some ways that time could be released to develop faith.

These sessions are open to all, but booking is essential.
