The Revd Louise Petheram, Priest-in-Charge of Youlgreave, Middleton, Stanton-in-Peak and Birchover, has been appointed House for Duty Priest-in-Charge of Hope, Castleton and Bradwell in the same Diocese. Mrs Petheram hopes to take up her new post in 2020.

The Revd Sarah Watson, Assistant Curate in the Walbrook Epiphany Team Ministry, will transfer her curacy and become Assistant Curate of the Derwent Oak BMO (including St Philip’s Church Plant) and of Spondon in the same diocese with effect from 1 November 2019.

The Revd Peter Green, Vicar of Old Brampton and Great Barlow and Priest-in-Charge of Loundsley Green LEP, has been appointed Vicar of the benefice of The Abbey Group of Parishes, Diocese of Lincoln.

The Revd Richard Benson, Vicar of the White Peak Group, retired with effect from 31 August 2019. Mr Benson will move away from the Diocese after retirement.

We are aware of some suspicious emails that appear to be from clergy and even from Bishop Libby. Responding to the emails will result in requests for money or gift cards.

Please DO NOT reply to the emails.

We are not currently aware how many may be affected; however, it is important that we are all aware and be vigilant to protect our online safety and security.

We are not aware of any system security breach and are in the process of compiling some website best practice guidelines so that our churches can take action to greater protect themselves.

 

Steps to take if you receive a suspicious email

  1. DO NOT reply to the email.
  2. Check the email address of the sender – is it the same email address as usual?
  3. If in doubt, type in the usual email address of the clergy, rather than just hit reply. Better still, talk to them and check if they have sent this email.
  4. Run a complete anti-virus scan of your computer.
  5. If you have sent any money as a direct result of the email, please contact the Police to report the matter.

  1. Reassure any recipients that you have not sent the email and verify your correct email address.
  2. As a safety procedure, reset your email password and any clergy portal passwords.
  3. Run a complete anti-virus scan of your computer.
  4. If you receive any reports of money being sent as a direct result of the email, please contact the Police to report the matter.

On Sunday, 6 October 2019, four candidates were Admitted and Licensed by Bishop Libby as Readers at a very special service in Derby Cathedral. The service also served as a Thanksgiving for 50 years of Reader Ministry by Women.

Readers in the Church of England are lay people froma range of backgrounds and experiences who are trained and authorised to preach, teach and lead worship.

There are more than 8,500 Readers actively involved in ministry in the Church of England today.

Men were licensed into the role in 1866, but it was over 100 yars later before women were permitted to become Readers.

Legislation was passed in 1969 and since then the ministry of both women and men as Readers has continued to be a vital part of the life of the Church of England.

The Revd William Eardley, Team Vicar in the Dronfield with Holmesfield Team Ministry with special responsibility for the district of Holmesfield, Diocese of Derby, has announced his retirement. Mr Eardley’s last day in post will be Wednesday, 31 July 2019 with his retirement taking effect from Thursday, 1 August 2019. Mr Eardley will move away from the Diocese after retirement.

The Revd Jude Davis, Rector of Hathersage with Bamford and Derwent, and Grindleford, Diocese of Derby, has announced her resignation. Miss Davis’ last day in her current post will be Saturday, 29 June 2019, with her resignation taking effect from Sunday, 30 June 2019. Miss Davis’ will be leaving the diocese on the occasion of her forthcoming marriage.

The Revd Jo Whitehead stepped down as the Diocesan Enablement Officer with effect from 1st May 2019. Mrs Whitehead continues to hold the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate at Derby St Werburgh's BMO.

Notice of Death - The Rt Revd Richard Inwood, Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Derby, died on Sunday, 14 April 2019 following a short illness. 

Bishop Richard was ordained in the Diocese of Sheffield, serving as curate at Fulwood 1974-1978 and at St Marylebone All Souls with St Peter and St John in the Diocese of London 1978-1981. He moved to the Diocese of Bath and Wells to become Vicar of St Luke’s Bath 1981-1989 and Rector of Yeovil with Kingston Pitney 1989-1995, and was appointed Prebendary of Wells Cathedral 1990-1995. Following this, he served as Archdeacon of Halifax in the Diocese of Wakefield 1995-2003 and then as Bishop of Bedford in the Diocese of St Albans 2003-2012. Bishop Richard retired in 2012 and came to live in the Diocese of Derby where he was appointed Honorary Assistant Bishop from 2012. Funeral details will follow in due course.

The Revd Canon Dr Simon Taylor, Director of Curate Training, Area Dean of Derby City Deanery and Canon Chancellor of Derby Cathedral, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Director of Ministry Development, Diocese of Bristol. Dr Taylor hopes to take up his new post in the Summer.

The Revd Bill Bazely, House for Duty Assistant Curate of St Thomas, Brampton, with special responsibility for the district of Holymoorside, Diocese of Derby, has announced his retirement. Mr Bazely’s last day in his current post will be 30 May 2019 with his retirement taking effect from 31 May 2019. Mr Bazely will continue to live in the Diocese after retirement.

The Revd Bruce Johnson, Assistant Curate of Heanor, Langley Mill and Aldercar, and Marlpool, Diocese of Derby, transferred his curacy and become Assistant Curate of Belper Christ Church with Turnditch. Mr Johnson started his post on Friday, 19 April 2019.

 The Revd Alasdair Kay, Priest-in-Charge of Mackworth St Francis, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Rector of Wyke Regis, All Saints and St Edmunds, Diocese of Salisbury. Mr Kay hopes to take up his new appointment in September.

The Revd Paul Mellars will be licensed as Team Vicar in the Dronfield and Holmesfield Team Ministry, Diocese of Derby, on Thursday, 20 June 2019 at 7.30 pm at St Andrew’s Gosforth Valley, Dronfield, by the Bishop of Repton, assisted by the Archdeacon of Chesterfield.

The Revd Ian Mountford, Assistant Curate of the benefice of Derby St Alkmund and St Werburgh, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Vicar of the same benefice. Mr Mountford hopes to take up his new post in June.

The Revd Phil Selby, Assistant Curate of Trinity Church Buxton, has been appointed Rector of Stanton-by-Dale with Dale Abbey and Risley. Mr Selby will be instituted as Rector on Wednesday, 26 June 2019 at 7.30 pm at St Michael and All Angels, Stanton-by-Dale by the Bishop of Repton and inducted by the Archdeacon of Derby.

Notice of Retirement - The Revd Liz Kirby, Rector of Elmton with Creswell and Whitwell with Steetley, Diocese of Derby, has announced her retirement. Mrs Kirby’s last day in post will be Thursday, 30 May 2019, with her retirement taking effect from Friday, 31 May 2019. Mrs Kirby will be moving away from the diocese.

Notice of Death - The Revd Alan MacGregor, non-stipendiary minister of Worting 1997-2000 (Winchester), Permission to Officiate 2001-2002 (London), Permission to Officiate 2003-2008 (Salisbury), Permission to Officiate 2012-2017 (Derby), died on Saturday, 9 February 2019. A service of thanksgiving will be held on Tuesday, 5 March 2019 at 12 noon at St Stephen’s, Borrowash.

Notice of Death - The Revd Charles Roy Wilson, Curate of Kirkdale St Paul North Shore 1959-1962 (Liverpool), Curate of St Helens St Mark 1962-1966, Vicar of Wolverhampton St Matthew 1966-1974 (Lichfield), Vicar of Ripley 1974-1988 (Derby), Vicar of Willington and of Findern 1988-1995, who retired in 1995 and held the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate in retirement, died on Thursday, 21 February 2019. The funeral will be held on Friday, 15 March 2019 at 1 pm at All Saints Ripley.


The Revd Naomi Barraclough, Assistant Curate of Ashbourne with Mapleton with Ashbourne St John and Pioneer Curate throughout the Carsington Deanery, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Associate Pioneer Minister in the Over Wyre Group of Parishes, Diocese of Blackburn.

The Revd Jonathan Bell, Assistant Curate of Stanton-by-Dale with Dale Abbey and Risley, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Minister of Grace Church, Highlands, Diocese of London. Mr Bell last day in his current post will be Tuesday, 9 April 2019, with his licensing taking place on Wednesday, 10 April 2019.

The Revd Geoffrey Borrowdale will be instituted as Rector of Hasland and Vicar of Temple Normanton, Diocese of Derby, on Saturday, 13 April 2019 at 4 pm at St Paul’s Hasland by the Bishop of Repton (Acting Bishop of Derby) and inducted by the Archdeacon of Chesterfield. The Bishop of Ebbsfleet will preside at the Eucharist.

The Revd James Durrant, Assistant Curate of Derby St Alkmund and St Werburgh, Diocese of Derby, will transfer his curacy and become Assistant Curate of the Cathedral Church of All Saints Derby in the same diocese with effect from Sunday, 19 May 2019. Mr Durrant’s contact details will remain the same.

The Revd Peter Hallsworth, Associate Vicar of the benefice of Clifton, Diocese of York, has been appointed half-time Assistant Curate (to be known as Pioneer Minister) in Langley Mill and Aldercar. Mr Hallsworth will be licensed on Tuesday, 7 May 2019 at 7.30 pm at St Andrew’s Langley Mill by the Bishop of Repton.

The Revd Darren Howie, Assistant Curate of Derby St Peter and Christ Church with Holy Trinity, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Pioneer Missioner for Derby Methodist Circuit, based in Derby City Centre. Mr Howie will take up his new post on Sunday, 14 April 2019 and will also have the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate in the Diocese of Derby.

The Revd Lee Martin, Priest-in-Charge of Hatton, Diocese of Derby, will retire in April 2019. Mrs Martin’s last day in post will be Sunday, 21 April 2019, with her retirement taking effect from Monday, 22 April 2019. She will continue to live in the Diocese.

The Revd Canon Michael Mitton, Priest-in-Charge of Derby St Paul, will retire with effect from Monday, 1 July 2019. Canon Mitton will be appointed Canon Emeritus of Derby Cathedral in retirement and will continue to live in the Diocese.

The Revd Lindsay Pearson, Assistant Curate in the Wirksworth Team Ministry, Diocese of Derby, will transfer her curacy and become Assistant Curate of Chesterfield Ss Augustine in the same diocese with effect from Sunday, 5 May 2019.

The Revd Jane Plackett-Ferguson, Assistant Curate of the Derwent Ward Bishop’s Mission Order and of Aston on Trent, Elvaston, Weston on Trent and Shardlow, Barrow upon Trent with Twyford and Swarkestone, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Assistant Rector at St Martin’s Episcopal Church, Houston, Texas, USA. Mrs Plackett-Ferguson expects to finish her current post in May 2019. 

The Revd Kate Plant, Assistant Curate of Holbeach, Diocese of Lincoln, has been appointed Priest-in-Charge of Breadsall and of Morley with Smalley, Diocese of Derby. Mrs Plant will be licensed on Thursday, 9 May 2019 at 7.30 pm at St John the Baptist Smalley by the Bishop of Repton assisted by the Archdeacon of Derby.
