The Bishop of Derby has announced the new Diocesan Secretary will be Will Hagger, who is currently Director of Housing and Investment Property in the Diocese of London.

Will brings with him a wealth of experience, having worked for the London Diocesan Fund for eight years. He is a chartered surveyor and has previously worked for property fund management business, Newcore Capital.

Will said: “I am really excited by the opportunities and challenges that my new role in Derby will present, both professionally and personally. Whilst I will be sad to leave the Diocese of London, I am looking forward to getting acquainted with the Diocese of Derby and the whole of Derbyshire.”

On announcing the appointment, Bishop Libby said: “I know you will join me in warmly welcoming Will to the Diocese of Derby. He will be a great asset to the diocese and in leading DBF colleagues from Church House. Please keep him and his family in your prayers as they prepare to move, and through all their transitions.”

Will’s first day with us will be 1st May 2023.

The Revd Neil Barber, Vicar of Normanton-by-Derby, has also been appointed Priest-in-Charge of Sinfin St Stephen in the same diocese.

The Revd Will Eley, Assistant Curate of Normanton-by-Derby, has been appointed Assistant Curate (known as Associate Minister) of Normanton-by-Derby and of Sinfin St Stephen.

The Revd Lynn Hayler, Team Vicar in the North Wingfield Team Ministry, has announced her resignation. Lynn’s last day in post will be Sunday, 30 April 2023.

The Revd Jenny Simpson, Assistant Curate of the St Werburgh’s Derby Bishop’s Mission Order (BMO), Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Assistant Curate (known as Associate Minister) of the same BMO.

The Revd Stuart Baxter, Curate of Kirby (Diocese of Liverpool) 1970-1973, Curate of Ainsdale 1973-1976, worker for the Church Mission Society, including time in Sierre Leone 1976-1984, Vicar of Nelson in Little Marsden (Diocese of Blackburn) 1984-1992, Vicar of Lostock Hall (1992-1999), Priest-in-Charge of Hatton (Diocese of Derby) 1999-2004, Assistant Chaplain of HMP Sudbury 1999-2003, Assistant Chaplain of HMP Foston Hall 2003-2006, who retired in 2006 and held the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate, died on Saturday, 31 December 2022.

The funeral will take place on Friday, 13 January 2023 at 12.30 pm at St Peter’s Belper.

The Revd Trevor Beedell, Curate of Walton (St Edmundsbury and Ipswich) 1965-1968, Rector of Hartshorne (Derby) 1968-1979, Rural Dean of Repton 1974-1979, Chaplain to HMP Foston 1979-1980 Vicar of Doveridge 1979-1986, Diocesan Director of Christian Stewardship 1979-1997, who retired in 1997, was Retirement Chaplain with his wife Mary until 2009, and held the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate until 2018, died on Tuesday, 20 December 2022.

A thanksgiving service will be held on Monday, 23 January 2023 at 11.30 am at St Wilfrid’s West Hallam, following a private service at the Crematorium. If you plan to attend please email mdleb@icloud.com.

 

A service of celebration and thanksgiving for the ministry of the Venerable Carol Coslett, Archdeacon of Derbyshire Peak and Dales, will take place on Saturday, 11 February 2023 at 3 pm at St John’s Buxton. This will be an opportunity to say farewell as Carol leaves for her new post in the Diocese of Southwark. Several choirs will be participating and offering different musical contributions during the service.

The Revd Sandra Doore, Team Vicar in the Gateacre Team Ministry, Diocese of Liverpool, has been appointed Team Vicar in the Buxton with Burbage and King Sterndale Team Ministry, Diocese of Derby.

The Revd Nicola McNally, Assistant Curate in the benefice of Tideswell, has been appointed interim part-time Priest-in-Charge of ‘The Peak Five’ Benefice (comprising Fenny Bentley, Thorpe, Tissington, Parwich and Alsop-en-le-Dale) and interim part-time Assistant Curate (known as Associate Priest) for Carsington Deanery.

The Revd Dr Simon Cartwright, Team Vicar in the Walbrook Epiphany Team, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed part-time Chief Officer of Transforming Notts Together, a joint venture between the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham and the Church Urban Fund, based in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. Simon started in post on 1 November 2022. He also holds the Bishop of Derby's Permission to Officiate. 

The Venerable Carol Coslett, Archdeacon of Derbyshire Peak and Dales, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Assistant Director of Lay Ministry, Diocese of Southwark, subject to completion of due process. Carol hopes to start in her new role in March 2023. 

 

8 December 2022

The Revd Becky Reeve, Assistant Curate in the Walbrook Epiphany Team Ministry, Diocese of Derby, will transfer her curacy and become Assistant Curate in Ockbrook and Borrowash in the same diocese. Becky will be licensed on Monday 12th December at Derby Church House by the Archdeacon of East Derbyshire acting as the Bishop of Derby’s commissary.

The Revd Jason Kennedy will be licensed as Assistant Curate (SSM - Associate Priest) of Littleover, Diocese of Derby, on Thursday 8 December at 9am by the Bishop of Repton at Repton House. 

The Revd Mary Staunton, Assistant Curate (SSM-Associate Priest) of Mickleover, Diocese of Derby, has announced her retirement. Mrs Staunton's last day in post will be 1 December with her retirement taking effect from 2 December 2022. She will stay in the Diocese in retirement.

The Revd Martin Flowerdew, Vicar of Foremark and Repton with Newton Solney, Diocese of Derby, has announced his retirement. Mr Flowerdew’s last day in post will be 18th November 2022.

Following a two-month extension, Mrs Jacqui Greatorex’s fixed term role as Senior Executive Assistant to Bishop Libby finished on Monday 12th September. We wish her well for the future.

The Revd Elaine Jones, Assistant Curate of Sawley, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Priest in Charge of Mitford and Hebron, and Bolam with Whalton, and Hartburn with Meldon and Netherwhitton, Diocese of Newcastle.

Kate Godfrey, Diocesan Secretary, has resigned her position with immediate effect. Please hold Kate in your prayers. 

The Revd John Hudghton, Vicar of Hayfield and Chinley with Buxworth, has announced his retirement. Revd Hudghton’s last day in post will be Thursday, 20 October 2022. The Bishop thanks the Revd Hudghton for his service and sends her very best wishes to him on his retirement.

Sian Kellogg has been appointed Senior Executive Assistant to Bishop Libby, the Bishop of Derby. She will transition from her current role as Executive Officer for Derby Diocesan Board of Finance to this new post flexibly with some joint working through October. The Revd Canon Dave Perkins, Vicar of Beeley and Edensor, has announced his retirement. Canon Perkins’ last day in post will be Thursday, 8 January 2023, with his retirement taking effect from Friday, 9 January 2023. Canon Perkins will remain in the diocese after retirement.

The Revd Sandra Till, Assistant Curate of Alvaston, Diocese of Derby, resigned from her curacy on 19th May 2022 due to ill health.

The Revd Aidan Watson, previously Assistant Curate of Downend, Diocese of Bristol, has been appointed Strategic Lead for Youth Ministry within the Diocesan Board of Education, Diocese of Derby. Mr Watson will start in post on Wednesday 31 August.

The Revd Canon Elaine Jones, Parish Deacon of Tottenham Holy Trinity (London) 1987-1992, Parish Deacon of Clay Hill St John the Baptist and St Luke 1992-1994, Curate of London City St Botolph Aldgate with Holy Trinity Minories 1994-1996, Vicar of Hackney Wick St Mary of Eton 1996-2004, Area Dean of Hackney 1999-2004, Canon Residentiary (Canon Pastor) of Derby Cathedral (Derby) 2004-2013, Assistant Curate (Associate Priest) of Derby St John the Evangelist 2013-2022, who retired in 2022, has died.  Canon Jones’ funeral will be held on Wednesday, 31 August 2021 at 11.45 am at St John's Derby.

The Revd Bill Enoch, NSM Ilkeston St Mary the Virgin (Derby) 1979 - 1985, Priest-in-Charge Ilkeston Holy Trinity (1985 - 1995), who retired in 1995 and held the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate in retirement, died on Tuesday, 26 April 2022. The funeral will take place on Monday, 16 May at 11.00 am at St Mary’s Ilkeston.

The Revd Canon Peter Walley will step down from the role of Acting Archdeacon of Derby after Easter, with his last day in post being Saturday, 30 April 2022. Bishop Libby is very grateful for his generous and care-filled exercise of this role, and for his contribution to diocesan leadership since January 2021. Many colleagues share her appreciation for this faithful ministry. Canon Walley will continue in post as Vicar of the benefice of Mickleover and Assistant Curate (Minister Responsible) of the parish of Radbourne. Until the collation of the recently appointed Archdeacons, the Bishop of Repton and the Archdeacon of Chesterfield will share the duties of the Archdeacon of Derby.

Bishop Libby regrets to announce the death of Mr Mat Mawson, an Ordinand from the Diocese of Derby and former Canon’s Verger of Derby Cathedral. Mat will be received in Derby Cathedral at 3 pm on Tuesday, 5 April 2022 where a short requiem will be held. The funeral will be 10 am on Wednesday, 6 April 2022 in Derby Cathedral. The service will also be live streamed on the Cathedral YouTube channel

 

The Revd Richard Clark, Team Rector of Holy Trinity Redditch with St Bartholomew’s Tardebigge, Diocese of Worcester, has been appointed Team Rector-in-Charge of the North Wingfield Team Ministry, Diocese of Derby.

The Revd Liz England’s instituted as Team Rector of Buxton with Burbage and King Sterndale Team Ministry, which was to take place on Sunday, 6 March 2022, was postponed due to a local increase in Covid cases. Mrs England will now be instituted on Sunday, 15 May 2022 at 5 pm at St John’s Buxton by the Bishop of Repton and inducted by the Archdeacon of Chesterfield.

The Revd Royston Smith, Assistant Curate (Associate Priest) of Walton St John, Diocese of Derby, has announced his retirement. Mr Smith’s last day in post was 22 March 2022, with his retirement taking effect from 23 March 2022. Mr Smith has been granted the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate in retirement.

The Revd Tony Street, Rector of Sawley, has announced his retirement. Mr Street’s last day in post will be Sunday, 14 August 2022, with his retirement taking effect from Monday, 15 August 2022. Mr Street will move away from the diocese in retirement.

The Revd Gary Weston, Vicar of Hinkley St John the Evangelist, Diocese of Leicester, has been appointed Priest-in-Charge of Brampton St Thomas and Assistant Curate (to be known as Associate Priest) of Brampton St Mark, Diocese of Derby. Revd Weston will be licenced as Priest-in-Charge of Brampton St Thomas and Assistant Curate (Associate Priest) of Brampton St Mark, on Sunday, 3 April 2022 at 6 pm at St Thomas’ Brampton by the Bishop of Derby assisted by the Archdeacon of Chesterfield.

The Revd Leonard Young, Vicar of Derby St Bartholomew and St Luke, Diocese of Derby, has announced his retirement. Mr Young’s last day in post will be Monday, 31 January 2022, with his retirement taking effect from Tuesday, 1 February 2022. Leonard will be moving away from the diocese in retirement.

The Revd Imogen Black, Priest-in-Charge of Somercotes and Assistant Curate (Associate Priest) of Alfreton and of Riddings and Ironville, has also been appointed Priest-in-Charge of Pinxton in the same diocese.

The Revd Steve Cotterill, previously Assistant Curate at Annesley and Newstead, with Kirkby Woodhouse, Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, and who holds the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham’s Permission to Officiate in Brinsley with Underwood and Eastwood, has been appointed Assistant Curate (SSM-to be known as Associate Priest) of Pinxton, Diocese of Derby.

The Revd Graham Duncan, who currently holds the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate, has been appointed Assistant Curate (known as Associate Priest) of the parish of Baslow, within the benefice of Baslow and Eyam.

The Revd Phil Michell, Rector of Hulland, Atlow, Kniveton, Bradley and Hognaston, has also been appointed Assistant Acting Area Dean of Carsington deanery until 2 November 2022.

The Revd James Muston, NSM Chaddesden St Mary (Derby) 1991-1995, Community Minister East Marsh Grimsby (Lincoln) 1995-1999, Vicar of Gresley (Derby) 1999-2004, who retired in 2004 and held the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate in retirement, died on 12th December 2021.The Revd James Muston, NSM Chaddesden St Mary (Derby) 1991-1995, Community Minister East Marsh Grimsby (Lincoln) 1995-1999, Vicar of Gresley (Derby) 1999-2004, who retired in 2004 and held the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate in retirement, died on 12 December 2021. The Revd Pam Macnaughton, Leadership Enabler for CPAS, has been appointed Assistant Curate (SSM-known as Associate Priest) of Ripley, Diocese of Derby. 

The Revd Aron Simpson will be licenced as interim Priest-in-Charge of Morton and Stonebroom with Shirland, Diocese of Derby, on Wednesday 8th December at 6.30 pm at St Leonard’s Shirland by the Bishop of Repton assisted by the Archdeacon of Chesterfield. 

The Revd John Wigram will be licenced as Priest-in-Charge of Swanwick and Pentrich, Diocese of Derby, on Sunday 30th January 2022 at 4 pm at St Andrew’s Swanwick by the Bishop of Repton assisted by the Acting Archdeacon of Derby.

Her last day in post will be Monday, 10 January 2022, with her retirement taking effect from Tuesday, 11 January 2022. Carollyn will be moving away from the diocese in retirement.

The Revd Amanda Marshall, Assistant Curate of Ashbourne with Mapleton with Ashbourne St John, and of Clifton, Norbury and Snelston, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Vicar of Baxenden St John and Accrington St Paul, Diocese of Blackburn. Mrs Marshall will be instituted in her new post on Monday, 29 November 2021.

The Revd Gill Turner-Callis, Rector of West Hallam and Mapperley with Stanley, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Senior Chaplain and Spirituality Advisor for Alabaré Christian Care and Support Charity in Salisbury. Mrs Tuner-Callis will be seeking the Bishop of Salisbury’s Permission to Officiate.

The Revd Ken Johnson will be licensed as Assistant Curate (SSM-to be known as Associate Priest) of Somercotes, Alfreton, and Riddings and Ironville, on Wednesday, 17 November 2021 at 7.15 pm at Somercotes by the Bishop of Repton.

The Revd Gill Ball, Assistant Curate (SSM) of Newbold, transferred her curacy and become Assistant Curate (SSM) of Old Brampton and Great Barlow, and of Loundsley Green LEP in the same diocese on 1 October 2021.

The Revd Dr Peter Bold, Team Rector of the Dronfield with Holmesfield Team Ministry, has been appointed part-time Priest-in-Charge of Ashover and Brackenfield with Wessington and Assistant Curate (known as Minister Responsible) for Handley (within the benefice of North Wingfield), within the same diocese.

The Revd Barry Cooney, Curate of West Bromwich (Lichfield) 1970-1973, Curate of Wolverhampton 1973-1975, Curate of Rugeley 1975-1978, Vicar of Sneyd Green 1978-1987, Rector of Sandiacre (Derby) 1987-2011, who retired in 2011 and held the Bishop of Derby's and the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham's Permission to Officiate in retirement, died on Sunday 26 September 2021. 

The Revd Dave Walker, Assistant Curate (SSM) in the Dronfield with Holmesfield Team Ministry, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Assistant Curate (SSM-to be known as Associate Priest) of Eckington and Ridgeway, in the same diocese. Mr Walker will be licensed on Sunday 17 October at 6pm at St Peter and St Paul Eckington by the Bishop of Repton.
