The Revd Bill Enoch, NSM Ilkeston St Mary the Virgin (Derby) 1979 - 1985, Priest-in-Charge Ilkeston Holy Trinity (1985 - 1995), who retired in 1995 and held the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate in retirement, died on Tuesday, 26 April 2022. The funeral will take place on Monday, 16 May at 11.00 am at St Mary’s Ilkeston.

 

The Revd Joel Bird, Assistant Curate in the Dronfield with Holmesfield Team Ministry, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Assistant Curate of Grimsby St Mark, Diocese of Lincoln.

The Revd Nicola Grey, Rector of Cheadle with Freehay, Diocese of Lichfield, started her new appointment as Anglican Chaplain at HMP Foston Hall, Diocese of Derby, on Wednesday, 23 March 2022, and currently holds the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate.

Dr Jo Henderson-Merrygold, Lay Ministries Development Officer (including Warden of Readers), has been appointed Head of Lay Ministries for the Church of England. Jo’s last day in post will be Friday, 20 May 2022.

The Revd Bruce Johnson, Assistant Curate (SSM) of Ockbrook with Borrowash, has been appointed House for Duty Assistant Curate (known as Associate Minister) of the parishes of Walton-on-Trent, Croxall and Rosliston (within the benefice of Walton-on-Trent with Croxall, Rosliston with Linton and Castle Gresley) and the parish of Coton-in-the-Elms (within the benefice of Seale and Lullington with Coton-in-the-Elms).

The Revd Tracy Robinson will be licensed as Priest-in-Charge of the Denby Group, on Friday, 13 May 2022 at St Clement’s Horsley by the Bishop of Repton.

The Revd Canon Peter Walley will step down from the role of Acting Archdeacon of Derby after Easter, with his last day in post being Saturday, 30 April 2022. Bishop Libby is very grateful for his generous and care-filled exercise of this role, and for his contribution to diocesan leadership since January 2021. Many colleagues share her appreciation for this faithful ministry. Canon Walley will continue in post as Vicar of the benefice of Mickleover and Assistant Curate (Minister Responsible) of the parish of Radbourne. Until the collation of the recently appointed Archdeacons, the Bishop of Repton and the Archdeacon of Chesterfield will share the duties of the Archdeacon of Derby.

Bishop Libby regrets to announce the death of Mr Mat Mawson, an Ordinand from the Diocese of Derby and former Canon’s Verger of Derby Cathedral. Mat will be received in Derby Cathedral at 3 pm on Tuesday, 5 April 2022 where a short requiem will be held. The funeral will be 10 am on Wednesday, 6 April 2022 in Derby Cathedral. The service will also be live streamed on the Cathedral YouTube channel

 

The Revd Richard Clark, Team Rector of Holy Trinity Redditch with St Bartholomew’s Tardebigge, Diocese of Worcester, has been appointed Team Rector-in-Charge of the North Wingfield Team Ministry, Diocese of Derby.

The Revd Liz England’s instituted as Team Rector of Buxton with Burbage and King Sterndale Team Ministry, which was to take place on Sunday, 6 March 2022, was postponed due to a local increase in Covid cases. Mrs England will now be instituted on Sunday, 15 May 2022 at 5 pm at St John’s Buxton by the Bishop of Repton and inducted by the Archdeacon of Chesterfield.

The Revd Jane Legh, Assistant Curate (SSM-Associate Priest) of the South Dales benefice, has announced her retirement. Mrs Legh’s last day in post will be Sunday, 1 May 2022, with her retirement taking effect from Monday, 2 May 2022. Mrs Legh will remain in the diocese in retirement.

The Revd Royston Smith, Assistant Curate (Associate Priest) of Walton St John, Diocese of Derby, has announced his retirement. Mr Smith’s last day in post was 22 March 2022, with his retirement taking effect from 23 March 2022. Mr Smith has been granted the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate in retirement.

The Revd Tony Street, Rector of Sawley, has announced his retirement. Mr Street’s last day in post will be Sunday, 14 August 2022, with his retirement taking effect from Monday, 15 August 2022. Mr Street will move away from the diocese in retirement.

The Revd Mina Munns will be licensed as Vicar of Derby St Alkmund and St Werburgh, Diocese of Derby, on Sunday 7 November at 4pm at St Alkmund's Derby, by the Bishop of Repton assisted by the Acting Archdeacon of Derby. 

The Revd David Owens, Assistant Curate (known as Associate Minister and Director of Mission and Evangelism) in the benefice of Brampton St Thomas, has been appointed Planting Curate at Preston Minster, Diocese of Blackburn. Mr Owens hopes to take up his new post in September.

The Revd Paul Taylor, Rector of Brailsford with Shirley, Osmaston with Edlaston and Yeaveley, has announced his retirement. Mr Taylor's last day in post will be 19 February, with his retirement taking effect from 20 February 2022. Mr Taylor will be staying in the diocese.

The Revd Ben Griffiths, Rector of Newbold, has been appointed Ordained Vocations Officer in the Diocese of Derby. Mr Griffiths will start his new post on Friday, 1 October with his licensing on Monday, 4 October at 9 am in the Bishop’s Chapel by the Bishop of Derby.

Mr Mouncer’s last day in post will be Thursday, 30 September, with his retirement taking effect from Friday, 1 October 2021. Mr Mouncer will be moving away from the diocese.

The Revd Mina Munns, Priest-in-Charge of Cresswell St Bartholomew and Lynemouth, Diocese of Newcastle, has been appointed Vicar of Derby St Alkmund and St Werburgh, Diocese of Derby, subject to the completion of the legal process.

The Revd Jonathan Poston, Priest-in-Charge of Wingerworth, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Rector of St John and St Mary Devizes, Diocese of Salisbury. Mr Poston hopes to take up his new role in the Autumn.

The Revd Linda Webb, Assistant Curate (SSM) of Hulland, Atlow, Kniveton, Bradley and Hognaston, Diocese of Derby, completed her curacy and moved away from the diocese to be nearer family. Her last day in post was 1 July 2021.

Peak Deanery:

  • The Revd Canon Tony Kaunhoven, Vicar of Bakewell, Ashford in the Water with Sheldon and Rowsley, has also been appointed Acting Area Dean of Peak.
  • The Revd Nick Gurney, Priest-in-Charge of Dinting Vale and Pioneer Missioner to the Glossopdale Mission Community, has also been appointed Assistant Acting Area Dean in the same deanery.
  • Mrs Christine McMullen, Lay Chair of Peak Deanery, will assist with chairing the Deanery Synod and Leadership Team, and continue to provide oversight of the Readers within the deanery.
  • These appointments are with immediate effect and will be for one year in the first instance.

 

The Revd Dave Battison, Interim Assistant Curate (known as Associate Priest) of Walton St John, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Team Vicar of the Daventry Group, with particular responsibility for Staverton, Hellidon and Catesby, Diocese of Peterborough. Mr Battison's last day in post will be 27 June 2021.

The Revd Jane Legh has announced her resignation as Interim Priest-in-Charge of the benefice of Boylestone, Church Broughton, Dalbury, Longford, Long Lane, Radbourne, Sutton-on-the-Hill and Trusley, Diocese of Derby. mrs Legh's last day in this post will be 31 July 2021. Jane will continue as Assistant Curate (SSM- known as Associate Priest) in the benefice of The South Dales.

The Revd John Overton, Assistant Curate (SSM - Known as Associate Priest) of the Buxton with Burbage and King Sterndale Team Ministry, Diocese of Derby, has announced his retirement. Mr Overton's last day in post will be 2 August, with his retirement taking effect from 3 August 2021. His contact details will not change.

The Revd David Higgon, formerly Associate Priest in Crich and South Wingfield, retired on 24 April 2021. He will be granted Permission to Officiate in the North West Charge in the Diocese of Moray, Ross, and Caithness in the Scottish Episcopalian Church.

The Revd June Scott and the Revd Jenn Willis, Derby Diocesan Clergy Widows’ and Widowers’ Officers, will stand down from this role with effect from 31 May, 2021.

The Very Revd Geoffrey and Mrs Hazel Marshall have been appointed the new Derby Diocesan Clergy Widows’ and Widowers’ Officers with effect from 1 June, 2021.

The Revd Paul Desborough, Assistant Curate of Derby St Alkmund and St Werburgh, has been appointed part-time Priest-in-Charge (to be known as Enabling Minister) of Sinfin Moor LEP and part-time Bishop’s Advisor for New Housing.

The Revd Stella Greenwood, Assistant Curate of Swadlincote and Hartshorne, has been appointed Priest-in-Charge of Etwall and Egginton and Assistant Curate (known as Minister Responsible) of the parishes of Dalbury, Sutton on the Hill and Trusley (within the benefice of Boylestone, Church Broughton, Dalbury, Longford, Long Lane, Radbourne, Sutton on the Hill and Trusley).

The Revd Nigel Elliott, Vicar of Sinfin, has announced his retirement. Mr Elliott’s last day in post will be 31 July, with his retirement taking effect from 1 August 2021. Mr Elliott will be moving away from the diocese in retirement.

The Revd Canon Dr Elizabeth Thomson, Canon Missioner and Sub-Dean of Derby Cathedral, has been appointed Provost and Rector of St Paul’s Cathedral Dundee, Diocese of Brechin in the Scottish Episcopal Church. Dr Thomson will be installed as Provost and instituted as Rector on 19 June 2021.

The Rt Revd Malcolm Macnaughton was installed as Bishop of Repton on Sunday 18 April at 5.15 pm in Derby Cathedral by Bishop Libby, following his consecration at a service at Lambeth Palace on 14 April 2021. The Revd Canon Nicky Fenton was installed as Residentiary Canon in the same service.

Mercia Deanery (posts will be for one year in the first instance):
The Revd Dr Mike Firbank, Vicar of Gresley, has also been appointed Acting Area Dean of Mercia.
The Revd Steve Short, Rector of Melbourne, Ticknall, Smisby and Stanton-by-Bridge, has also been appointed Assistant Acting Area Dean in the same deanery.
Mrs Maggie Fenby-Taylor, Lay Chair of Mercia Deanery, will chair the Mercia Deanery Synod.

Mrs Ruth Attwood will continue to provide oversight of the Readers within Mercia deanery.

Jo Henderson-Merrygold, who has recently completed a PhD in Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies at the University of Sheffield, has been appointed Lay Ministries Development Officer (to include Warden of Readers). Jo will start in post on Tuesday, 27 April 2021. Mrs Christine McMullen will continue as Acting Warden of Readers until this date.

The Revd Neil Roberts, Chaplain to Repton School, has been appointed Rector of Guildford St Nicolas, Diocese of Guildford. Mr Roberts hopes to take up his new appointment in September.

The Revd Dave Battison, previously Pioneer Minister covering Matlock Bank and Matlock St Giles, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Interim Assistant Curate (to be known as Associate Priest) of Walton St John in the same diocese. Mr Battison will be licensed on Thursday 25 March at 9am by the Bishop of Derby. 

The Revd Imogen Black, Priest in Charge of Somercotes and Assistant Curate in Alfreton, Riddings and Ironville, Diocese of Derby, has also been appointed Acting Area Dean of Hardwick. The Revd Karen Bradley, Vicar in the East Scarsdale Team, and the Revd Rachel Gouldthorpe, Vicar of Bolsover, have also been appointed Assistant Acting Area Deans in the same deanery. These posts will be for one year in the first instance. 

The Revd Mark Broomhead, Pioneer Minister to the Order of the Black Sheep, Diocese of Derby, has been seconded to the Discipleship, Mission and Ministry Team at Church House as Pioneer Development Officer for a period of one year. Mr Broomhead will start with immediate effect. 

Mrs Halina Johnson, Senior Executive Assistant to the Bishop of Derby, will be leaving for a new post in the financial services industry. Halina's last day in the office will be Thursday 1 April. 
Bishop Libby says, ' Halina has been a much appreciated colleague in the Bishop's Office. She has made a significant impact in the time she has been with us during a period of considerable change. We are grateful for all Halina has done, and wish her well for her future. She goes with the assurance of my continuing prayers.'


Rachel Morris has decided to stand down from her position as Diocesan Secretary of the Derby Diocesan Board of Finance. She will also leave her role as Chapter Steward at Derby Cathedral.  Rachel has been with the Cathedral and latterly the Diocese for six years in which time she has led positive change.  Bishop Libby says “We are very grateful to Rachel for the faithful leadership she has given during a time of considerable change: her contribution to Diocesan life has been extensive. I have valued her partnership and friendship. We wish her well and assure her of our continuing prayers.”  Rachel said “I am grateful for the opportunities during this time and extend my heartfelt thanks to all colleagues, volunteers and partners across the Diocese and beyond who have helped achieve great things. I wish all those involved with the Cathedral and the Diocese the very best for the future.” Rachel left on February 28 with our thanks for her significant contribution and our best wishes for the future. 

Nadine Waldron of Eddowes Waldron, Solicitors, will retire as the Diocesan Registrar on 5th March 2021 in line with Section 32 Ecclesiastical Offices and Care of Church Measure 2018.  The process to appoint a new, permanent registrar is in progress. Under Section 31 of the same Measure, in her capacity as Registrar, Nadine has appointed a Deputy Registrar within Eddowes Waldron, Catherine Hackney, until a new, permanent registrar is appointed, which is hoped to be in the Autumn. Additional registrar expertise and support will be available to Catherine from a regional registrar, and sought as necessary via Eddowes Waldron. The Revd Canon Peter Walley’s appointment as Acting Archdeacon of Derby has been extended until 31 December 2021 as discussions continue about the shape of a longer-term appointment.

The Revd Kevin Ball, Rector of Calow and Sutton-cum-Duckmanton, has announced his retirement. Mr Ball’s last day in post will be 30 April, with his retirement taking effect from 1 May 2021. Mr Ball will be staying in the diocese in retirement. 

The Revd Ed Backhouse, Assistant Curate of Aston on Trent, Elvaston, Weston on Trent and Shardlow, Barrow upon Trent with Twyford and Swarkestone, has been appointed Priest-in-Charge of St Oswald’s Tile Hill, Diocese of Coventry. Mr Backhouse hopes to take up his new role in the Summer. 

The Revd Dwayne Engh, Vicar of Coventry St Mary Magdalen, Diocese of Coventry, has been appointed Ordained Ministries Development Officer, Diocese of Derby. Mr Engh will start on and be licensed in his new role on Monday 26 April by the Bishop of Derby. 

The Revd Nicky Fenton will start as Chaplain to the Bishop of Derby and Residentiary Canon of Derby Cathedral, Diocese of Derby, on Monday 1 March, with her licensing as Chaplain and collation as Residentiary Canon on Wednesday 3 March by the Bishop of Derby. Mrs Fenton will be installed as Residentiary Canon at a later date. 

The Revd Charles Jefferson, Interim Priest-in-Charge of the benefices of Walton-on-Trent with Croxall, Rosliston with Linton and Castle Gresley; of Seale and Lullington with Coton-in-the-Elms; and of Stapenhill Immanuel, has announced his retirement. Mr Jefferson’s last day in post will be 31 March, with his retirement taking effect from 1 April, 2021. Mr Jefferson will be moving away from the diocese.

The Revd Carollyn McDonald, Priest-in-Charge of Fenny Bentley, Thorpe, Tissington, Parwich and Alsop-en-le-Dale, and Acting Diocesan Director of Ordinands, has also been appointed Acting Area Dean of Carsington in the diocese for a fixed term of up to six months from 14 January 2021. 

Mrs Christine McMullen, Lay Chair of Peak and Chair of the House of Laity, Diocese of Derby, has also been appointed Acting Warden of Readers in the same diocese for a fixed term of up to three months from 14 December 2020. 

The Revd Colin Pearson, Priest-in-Charge of Chapel-en-le-Frith and Area Dean of the Peak Deanery, has been appointed Area Dean of Salford and Leigh Deanery, Diocese of Manchester. Mr Pearson will be licensed to his new post on Sunday 6 June 2021. 

The Revd Canon David Truby, Team Rector of the Wirksworth Team Ministry, has also been appointed Assistant Area Dean of Carsington in the same diocese for a fixed term of up to six months from 14 January 2021.
