Mission
What is Journey in Faith?
Journey in Faith is a three 10-week term Christian discipleship course which runs from September to July. It's taught using a set of course manuals, in small, local groups.
Who can join?
JiF is open to all – although some understanding of the basics of Christian faith would be beneficial to your overall study.
What does it cost?
In the academic year 2012-13 we are charging £120 for the whole course, and it may be that your local church or denomination will be able to help with this expense.
Where does it happen?
Depending on student numbers and availability of tutors, we organise local tutorial groups throughout the region. There will be some teaching days (one or two per term) organised in each county.
What happens next?
If God is calling you to some form of recognised, licensed or ordained ministry then Journey of Faith will be a starting point for the appropriate training course. This will be explained as we go along.
How do I join?
Complete the booking form (see attachment below) and return it to the relevant address.
The course is delivered locally in thirty week-night sessions of two hours.
Running through all 3 terms will be opportunities to spend time discerning our gifts, hearing God's call and making our response to God.
Folders of study material and resources will be provided.
Written work is not obligatory, but there will be the option of completing one project per term.

Thank you for taking the time to consider applying for training for Licensed or Authorised Lay Ministry. Thereare two sets of documents to help you in this process, an information pack and an application pack which you will find below.
You will notice that we consider conversations with other people a useful and necessary part of the process.
These conversations give you time and space to reflect more deeply on your sense of vocation, your gifts
and skills and how these fit in to the life of the church. We therefore ask that as well as talking with your
incumbent and close personal friends, you have a conversation with a Diocesan Vocations Adviser. In order
to arrange this please contact the Vocations Team Leader The Revd Canon Geraldine Pond, 01335 343129, DDO@derby.Anglican.org
As well as providing space for you to talk with others we have provided a framework on which to base your
reflections and conversations in the form of some criteria for each form of ministry. These criteria are there
to help us all discern your fit for a particular ministry therefore, please make sure you provide what evidence
you can that you meet the criteria in your completed application pack.
The closing date for completed applications is 31st May 2012 and they should be sent to the Lay Ministry
Officer. Please note that if you are selected to train for Licensed or Authorised Lay Ministry we will need evidence of a satisfactory enhanced CRB check.
Please don’t hesitate to contact the Lay Ministry Officer if you have any further questions.

Readers are a vital part of the mission and ministry of the Church of England. They have the ministry of 'preaching and leading worship in a pastoral context' - they are licensed for a wide range of individual ministries, whilst remaining very much lay people. Many Readers have full-time or part-time employment outside the Church, others are retired or full-time family carers. A few work full-time in Church ministry, but this is still unusual.
More information about Readers can be found on the Central Readers Council website.
For more information, please contact:
The Warden of Readers for the Diocese of Derby: Dr Esther Elliott
01332 388674, or esther.elliott@derby.anglican.org
Or, her secretary, Mrs Fiona Bennett 01332 388670, or fiona.bennett@derby.anglican.org
Those who are successful in applying to train as a Reader will usually go on to study the Reader Training Programme which is delivered by the Southern North West Training Partnership (SNWTP). This is delivered locally in collaboration with the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham over three years.
The SNWTP website can be viewed here.
Following their licensing, Readers are expected to engage in CME specifically for a further 3 years, and then ongoing throughout their ministry according to training needs. Readers in the Diocese of Derby no longer have an individual CME budget to spend on books and training, but a programme of training is put together bi-annually to meet training needs, and all courses, exclusive to Readers, are free of charge. Please see this year’s programme below.
FUNERAL MINISTRY
Readers may lawfully officiate at funeral services (but only with the good will of the persons responsible) provided that the Reader is authorised by the Bishop to do so, and is invited by the minister of the parish or place.
In order to obtain authorisation they must have the support of their incumbent and attend a Diocesan Funeral and Bereavement Course followed by continued training and observation. This course occurs annually, and details of future courses may be found below when available.
To book a place or register an interest for any Reader CME courses, please contact:
