Appointments

The Revd Penny Goodchild, Assistant Curate (OLM) of Pinxton 2011-2015 (Derby), Assistant Curate (known as Associate Priest - OLM) of Pinxton 2015-2020, who retired in March 2020, died on Friday,18 December 2020. Funeral details will follow in due course

The Revd Nicky Fenton, Priest-in-Charge of Hazelwood, Holbrook and Milford, with occasional work as the Bishop’s Ordained Chaplain and on educational matters, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed by the Church Commissioners to be Chaplain to the Bishop of Derby and Residentiary Canon of Derby Cathedral in the same diocese. Mrs Fenton hopes to take up her appointment in March. Mrs Fenton will continue as Acting Retirement Chaplain and the Bishop’s Advisor in Spirituality as part of her new role.

The Revd Colin Cooper, Team Rector in the North Wingfield Team, has announced his retirement. Mr Cooper’s last day in post will be Sunday, 28 February 2021, with his retirement taking effect from Monday, 1 March 2021. Mr Cooper will be moving away from the diocese.

The Revd Sarah Watson, Assistant Curate of the Derwent Oak BMO (including St Philip’s Church Plant) and of Spondon, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Interim Assistant Curate (to be known as Enabling Minister) of Chaddesden St Philip with Derby St Mark, of Spondon, the parish of Derby St Andrew and St Osmund, the Derwent Oak Bishop’s Mission Order and the Journey Community Bishop’s Mission Order in the same diocese. Mrs Watson hopes to take up her new appointment in January.

The Revd Alun Rowlands, Assistant Curate (SSM - known as Associate Priest) in the benefice of Mickleover, has announced his retirement. Mr Rowlands’ last day in post will be Thursday, 4 February, with his retirement taking effect from Friday, 5 February, 2021. His contact details will not change.

The Revd Ian Mountford, Associate Priest of Derby St Alkmund and St Werburgh from 2014, Vicar-designate of the same benefice (Derby), previously Curate of Chilwell 1996-2000 (Southwell) and Team Vicar of Thame 2000-2014 (Oxford), died on Saturday, 7 December, 2019. Funeral details to follow.

The Revd Canon Geraldine Pond, recently retired as Diocesan Director of Vocations with responsibility for clergy well-being and Warden of Readers, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed interim Chaplain to the Cathedral Church of All Saints Derby for a period of one year. Canon Pond will start in post on Sunday, 15 December 2019.

Mr John Spreadborough will be ordained deacon in the parish of Elton within the Wirksworth Team Ministry, Diocese of Derby, on Sunday, 15 December at 3 pm at All Saints Elton by the Bishop of Repton.

The Revd Louise Petheram will be licensed as House for Duty Priest-in-Charge of Hope, Castleton and Bradwell, Diocese of Derby, on Wednesday, 22 January at 7.30 pm at St Peter’s Hope by the Bishop of Repton assisted by the Archdeacon of Chesterfield.

The Revd Rachel Williams, Assistant Curate (SSM) of Bolsover, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Assistant Curate (SSM - to be known as Associate Priest) in the same benefice. Mrs Williams will be licensed in the new year. Her contact details will not change.

The Revd Richard Benson, Vicar of the White Peak Group, retired with effect from 31 August 2019. Mr Benson will move away from the Diocese after retirement.

The Revd Nick Gurney was licensed as Priest-in-Charge of Dinting Vale and Pioneer Missioner to the Glossopdale Mission Community, on Wednesday, 25 September at Holy Trinity Dinting Vale by the Bishop of Derby assisted by the Archdeacon of Chesterfield.

The Revd Paul Desborough, Assistant Curate of Boulton, will transfer his curacy and become Assistant Curate of Derby St Alkmund and St Werburgh, in the same diocese.

The Revd Andrew Baguley will be licensed as Priest-in-Charge of Ilkeston St Mary and of Ilkeston St John, Diocese of Derby, on Tuesday, 1 October 2019 at 7.30 pm at Ilkeston St Mary by the Bishop of Derby assisted by the Archdeacon of Derby.

The Revd Ian Price, Assistant Curate (SSM) of Eckington and Ridgeway, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Assistant Curate (SSM - to be known as Associate Priest) in the Dronfield with Holmesfield Team Ministry, in the same diocese.

The Very Revd Dr Stephen Hance, Dean of Derby, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed National Lead for Evangelism and Witness for the Church of England. Dr Hance will take up his new role at the end of September. His final service will be on Sunday, 1 September 2019 at 10.45 am at Derby Cathedral.

The Revd Dr Graham Rutter, Priest-in-Charge of Swadlincote, Assistant Curate (known as Minister Responsible) for the parish of Hartshorne within the benefice of Hartshorne and Bretby, Assistant Curate (known as Associate Priest) of Gresley and of Newhall and Area Dean of Mercia, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Tutor of Old Testament at St Mellitus North West. Dr Rutter hopes to take up his new post in the autumn.

The Revd Hilary Moore, Assistant Curate (SSM) of Chesterfield Ss Augustine, of Brampton St Mark and with The Order of the Black Sheep, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Assistant Curate (SSM-to be known as Associate Priest) of Chesterfield Ss Augustine, Brampton St Mark, Brampton St Thomas, Walton St John, and Chesterfield St Mary and All Saints and Associate Pioneer Minister to the Order of the Black Sheep in the same diocese. Miss Moore will be licensed on Tuesday, 20 August 2019 at 9.30 am at Ss Augustine by the Bishop of Repton.

The Revd William Eardley, Team Vicar in the Dronfield with Holmesfield Team Ministry with special responsibility for the district of Holmesfield, Diocese of Derby, has announced his retirement. Mr Eardley’s last day in post will be Wednesday, 31 July 2019 with his retirement taking effect from Thursday, 1 August 2019. Mr Eardley will move away from the Diocese after retirement.

The Revd Jude Davis, Rector of Hathersage with Bamford and Derwent, and Grindleford, Diocese of Derby, has announced her resignation. Miss Davis’ last day in her current post will be Saturday, 29 June 2019, with her resignation taking effect from Sunday, 30 June 2019. Miss Davis’ will be leaving the diocese on the occasion of her forthcoming marriage.

The Revd Jo Whitehead stepped down as the Diocesan Enablement Officer with effect from 1st May 2019. Mrs Whitehead continues to hold the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate at Derby St Werburgh's BMO.

Notice of Death - The Rt Revd Richard Inwood, Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Derby, died on Sunday, 14 April 2019 following a short illness. 

Bishop Richard was ordained in the Diocese of Sheffield, serving as curate at Fulwood 1974-1978 and at St Marylebone All Souls with St Peter and St John in the Diocese of London 1978-1981. He moved to the Diocese of Bath and Wells to become Vicar of St Luke’s Bath 1981-1989 and Rector of Yeovil with Kingston Pitney 1989-1995, and was appointed Prebendary of Wells Cathedral 1990-1995. Following this, he served as Archdeacon of Halifax in the Diocese of Wakefield 1995-2003 and then as Bishop of Bedford in the Diocese of St Albans 2003-2012. Bishop Richard retired in 2012 and came to live in the Diocese of Derby where he was appointed Honorary Assistant Bishop from 2012. Funeral details will follow in due course.

The Revd Canon Dr Simon Taylor, Director of Curate Training, Area Dean of Derby City Deanery and Canon Chancellor of Derby Cathedral, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Director of Ministry Development, Diocese of Bristol. Dr Taylor hopes to take up his new post in the Summer.

The Revd Bill Bazely, House for Duty Assistant Curate of St Thomas, Brampton, with special responsibility for the district of Holymoorside, Diocese of Derby, has announced his retirement. Mr Bazely’s last day in his current post will be 30 May 2019 with his retirement taking effect from 31 May 2019. Mr Bazely will continue to live in the Diocese after retirement.

The Revd Bruce Johnson, Assistant Curate of Heanor, Langley Mill and Aldercar, and Marlpool, Diocese of Derby, transferred his curacy and become Assistant Curate of Belper Christ Church with Turnditch. Mr Johnson started his post on Friday, 19 April 2019.

 The Revd Alasdair Kay, Priest-in-Charge of Mackworth St Francis, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Rector of Wyke Regis, All Saints and St Edmunds, Diocese of Salisbury. Mr Kay hopes to take up his new appointment in September.

The Revd Paul Mellars will be licensed as Team Vicar in the Dronfield and Holmesfield Team Ministry, Diocese of Derby, on Thursday, 20 June 2019 at 7.30 pm at St Andrew’s Gosforth Valley, Dronfield, by the Bishop of Repton, assisted by the Archdeacon of Chesterfield.

Notice of Death - The Revd Charles Roy Wilson, Curate of Kirkdale St Paul North Shore 1959-1962 (Liverpool), Curate of St Helens St Mark 1962-1966, Vicar of Wolverhampton St Matthew 1966-1974 (Lichfield), Vicar of Ripley 1974-1988 (Derby), Vicar of Willington and of Findern 1988-1995, who retired in 1995 and held the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate in retirement, died on Thursday, 21 February 2019. The funeral will be held on Friday, 15 March 2019 at 1 pm at All Saints Ripley.

The Revd Jonathan Bell, Assistant Curate of Stanton-by-Dale with Dale Abbey and Risley, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Minister of Grace Church, Highlands, Diocese of London. Mr Bell last day in his current post will be Tuesday, 9 April 2019, with his licensing taking place on Wednesday, 10 April 2019.

The Revd Geoffrey Borrowdale will be instituted as Rector of Hasland and Vicar of Temple Normanton, Diocese of Derby, on Saturday, 13 April 2019 at 4 pm at St Paul’s Hasland by the Bishop of Repton (Acting Bishop of Derby) and inducted by the Archdeacon of Chesterfield. The Bishop of Ebbsfleet will preside at the Eucharist.

The Revd James Durrant, Assistant Curate of Derby St Alkmund and St Werburgh, Diocese of Derby, will transfer his curacy and become Assistant Curate of the Cathedral Church of All Saints Derby in the same diocese with effect from Sunday, 19 May 2019. Mr Howie will take up his new post on Sunday, 14 April 2019 and will also have the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate in the Diocese of Derby.

The Revd Lee Martin, Priest-in-Charge of Hatton, Diocese of Derby, will retire in April 2019. Mrs Martin’s last day in post will be Sunday, 21 April 2019, with her retirement taking effect from Monday, 22 April 2019. She will continue to live in the Diocese.

The Revd Canon Michael Mitton, Priest-in-Charge of Derby St Paul, will retire with effect from Monday, 1 July 2019. Canon Mitton will be appointed Canon Emeritus of Derby Cathedral in retirement and will continue to live in the Diocese.

The Revd Lindsay Pearson, Assistant Curate in the Wirksworth Team Ministry, Diocese of Derby, will transfer her curacy and become Assistant Curate of Chesterfield Ss Augustine in the same diocese with effect from Sunday, 5 May 2019.

The Revd Jane Plackett-Ferguson, Assistant Curate of the Derwent Ward Bishop’s Mission Order and of Aston on Trent, Elvaston, Weston on Trent and Shardlow, Barrow upon Trent with Twyford and Swarkestone, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Assistant Rector at St Martin’s Episcopal Church, Houston, Texas, USA. Mrs Plackett-Ferguson expects to finish her current post in May 2019. 

The Revd Kate Plant, Assistant Curate of Holbeach, Diocese of Lincoln, has been appointed Priest-in-Charge of Breadsall and of Morley with Smalley, Diocese of Derby. Mrs Plant will be licensed on Thursday, 9 May 2019 at 7.30 pm at St John the Baptist Smalley by the Bishop of Repton assisted by the Archdeacon of Derby.

From 10 Downing Street - The Queen has approved the nomination of The Right Reverend Elizabeth (Libby) Jane Holden Lane, MA (Oxon), Suffragan Bishop of Stockport, for election as Bishop of Derby in succession to The Right Reverend Alastair Llewellyn John Redfern, MA, PhD, following his resignation on the 31st August 2018.

The Revd Geoffrey Borrowdale, Vicar of Hayes St Anselm, Diocese of London, has been appointed Rector of Hasland and Vicar of Temple Normanton, Diocese of Derby. Mr Borrowdale hopes to take up his new post in April 2019.

Mr Jefferson hopes to take up his new appointment in the new year.

The Revd Ian Whitehead, Rector of Anslow, Rolleston & Tutbury, Diocese of Lichfield, has been appointed Priest-in-Charge of Crich and South Wingfield, Diocese of Derby. Mr Whitehead hopes to take up his new post in March 2019.

Mrs Dring will be licensed to her new post on Thursday, 10 January 2019 at 7.30 pm at St Andrew’s Blagreaves by the Archdeacon of Derby assisted by the Area Dean of Derby City.

The Revd Dr Lida Ellsworth, Assistant Curate (SSM) of Longstone, Curbar and Stoney Middleton, Diocese of Derby, retired on 10 November 2018. Dr Ellsworth is in the process of transferring to holding the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate. Her contact details remain the same.

The Revd Carla Vicêncio Prior, Assistant Curate at Derby Cathedral (formerly at Kirk Hallam), Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Team Vicar in the Wirksworth Team Ministry. Mrs Vicêncio Prior hopes to take up her new post in February 2019.

Mrs Joan Bowles, widow of Bishop Cyril Bowles (Bishop of Derby 1969-1987) died on 19 September 2018.  She was 99.  Her funeral was held in Prestbury, Cheltenham on 11 October 2018.

The Revd John Wood, Assistant Curate (SSM) of Morton and Stonebroom with Shirland, Diocese of Derby, retired on 13 September 2018. Mr Wood is in the process of transferring to holding the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate.

The Revd Bill Day, Assistant Curate (OLM) of Derby St Barnabas, Diocese of Derby, has transferred to having the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate in the same parish. There will be service to mark this transition on Wednesday 7th November at Derby St Barnabas with the Bishop of Repton.

The Revd Barbara Dale who retired in 2013, died on Sunday, 2 September 2018. Revd Barbara was Deaconess from 1981, Parish Deacon 1987-1990 of North Wingfield, Pilsley and Tupton (Diocese of Derby), Parish Deacon 1990-1994 then Team Vicar 1994-2000 of North Wingfield, Clay Cross and Pilsley; Assistant Curate of Eckington and Ridgeway 2000-2004, and Team Vicar in the East Scarsdale Team Ministry 2004-2013. Her funeral was held on 18 September 2018.

The Revd Liz England will be licensed as Team Rector-in-Charge of Buxton with Burbage and King Sterndale Team Ministry on Tuesday, 15 January 2019 at 7.30 pm at St John the Baptist Buxton by the Bishop of Repton, assisted by the Archdeacon of Chesterfield.

The Revd Ian Godlington, Assistant Curate (OLM) of the benefice of Mickleover, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Assistant Curate (OLM-to be known as Associate Priest) of the same benefice. Mr Godlington will be licensed on Tuesday, 16 October 2018 at 7.30 pm at All Saints Mickleover by the Bishop of Repton.

Dr Esther Elliott, Director of Studies, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Workplace Chaplain and Development Worker for Edinburgh West, based at Corstorphine Old Parish, Church of Scotland. Dr Elliott will leave her post on Friday, 9 November 2018.

The Revd Andrew Race, Assistant Curate of Littleover, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Vicar of Castle Donington and Lockington cum Hemington, Diocese of Leicester. Mr Race will be instituted and inducted to his new post on Tuesday, 5 February 2019.

The Revd Susan McIvor, Methodist Minister at Sinfin Moor, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed District Safeguarding Officer with the Nottingham and Derby District of the Methodist Church. Ms McIvor moved on 6 August 2018.

The Revd Judy Crane, who holds the Bishop of Derby’s Licence under Seal, will retire with effect from 1 August, 2018. Mrs Crane will continue to live within the diocese after retirement. 

The Rt Revd Roger Jupp, Vicar of Long Eaton St Laurence and Priest-in-Charge of Ilkeston Holy Trinity, Diocese of Derby, will retire with effect from 1st November 2018. Bishop Roger will be moving away from the diocese.

The Revd Trudie Morris, Vicar of the benefice of Pride Park, Wilmorton, Allenton and Shelton Lock, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Rector of All Saints, Stand, Diocese of Manchester. Mrs. Morris hopes to move to her new post in November.
