Can we give up slavery for Lent? A strange question maybe, but many parts of everyday life can involve slaves in the goods that we use. Why not spend some time over these 40 days looking at how we can ensure our lifestyle is not dependent upon slaves?

This sheet offers suggestions for beginning to give up slavery this Lent. Each week you are asked to read or listen to a story; talk with others about it; and act to change your habits.

Did you know apparently it takes 40 days to change a habit? As you make your way through this time of Lent think about what habit(s) you might want to change permanently. Don’t choose too many and consider what you can realistically afford?

Bishop Alastair's Lent Course 2015 - From Slavery to Salvation
This year the Diocesan Lent course will explore the issue of slavery using Jane Austen's novel 'Mansfield Park'. This book was published in 1814, the time of the last serious attempt to abolish slavery. The book raises a number of important challenges for us today, as our society looks at the rise in modern slavery and human trafficking.

The course will feature a brief introduction and five weekly sessions looking at characters and themes in the book.
