‘Sacrifice Remembered’ offers a précis of the Christian Gospel. Jesus Christ challenging selfishness and violence, and giving Himself unsparingly for peace, justice and the flourishing of those more wholesome relationships we call community – and which He termed ‘the kingdom of God’.
The book contains a poem by Jack Banks, aged 11 years. It is called ‘I hope for hope’. It begins:
Hope is in all minds.
Hope is in all hearts.
Hope is in all people.
That is the truth of the Gospel. It is the key to confronting violence and oppression. As we commemorate the First World War, and recall many other conflicts, may our hope be undiminished and our own way of life be a worthy witness to better practices.
‘Sacrifice Remembered’ is especially significant this November. I trust that this unique and moving book might provide hope and encouragement across the Diocese and unite us in a renewed commitment to peace.
