Bishop's Chaplain Travels to Belfast to join mass rally to end global hunger

Pippa Rowen from Duffield will be joining thousands of people in a mass rally in Belfast on Saturday 15 June, calling on world leaders to act on global hunger.

She will join thousands of people in Belfast Botanic Gardens for the ‘Big IF Belfast’ event to demand David Cameron and G8 leaders tackle the causes of global hunger.

This free event will take place on Saturday 15 June between 1-5pm and will feature high-profile speakers, musical performances from local and well-known artists, and video messages from celebrities. Acts already confirmed include Flash Harry, SOAK, Ulster Orchestra, David C. Clements and Richard Dormer (Game of Thrones).

Local campaigners from groups including Christian Aid, CAFOD, Oxfam and Tearfund will be travelling together to Belfast on Saturday 15 June to join this mass rally for the ‘Enough Food For Everyone IF…’ campaign.

Pippa said: ‘I’m proud to be able to represent the Bishop of Derby and the Diocese at such an important event. Global hunger and food poverty are issues that need to be addressed and this is our moment to act on the injustice. Following the success of the Derby Hunger Summit, I strongly encourage supporters and friends from the East Midlands to join us to ensure that their voice is heard by the G8 where eight world leaders will hear our voice on 15 June. This is our chance to stop 1 in 8 people going hungry. Together we are stronger.’

The Big IF Belfast is one of a series of events taking place across the country in the run up to the G8 summit this month which is being hosted by David Cameron in Northern Ireland from 17 to 18 June.  Earlier this week, 45,000 people gathered in Hyde Park for the Big IF London rally to bring their message of an end to global hunger to the G8.

Nearly 200 organisations based in the UK are calling for world leaders to take urgent action. The ‘Enough Food for Everyone IF…’ campaign is calling on the government to use the UK presidency of the G8 to act on global hunger.

The Belfast crowd will call on world leaders to tackle four big IF’s which could help create a world free from hunger:

•           IF we stop poor farmers being forced off their land, and we grow crops for food, not fuel

•           IF governments stop big companies dodging tax in poor countries, so millions of people can free themselves from hunger.

•           IF governments and big companies are honest about their actions that stop people getting enough food.

•           IF we give life-saving aid to stop children dying from hunger and help the poorest families feed themselves.

IF enough people come together in Belfast Botanic Gardens to create a big noise about hunger, G8 leaders will have to sit up and listen.

The Big IF Belfast takes place on Saturday 15th June from 1pm-5pm in the Botanic Gardens. For more event details please visit: http://enoughfoodif.org/g8/northern-ireland

Notes to Editor

About Enough Food IF campaign.

Nearly one billion people go to bed hungry every night and two million children die from malnutrition every year. We've made progress in other areas, but hunger is still the great scandal of our age. All around the world, even in the UK, people are struggling to feed their families.

In 2013, the government has promised to provide 0.7% of national income for aid and to host a Hunger Summit. We must make sure they keep these promises. In June, the world’s most powerful leaders will meet in the UK at the G8.

This is our best opportunity to tackle hunger. We must make IF happen.

We want our leaders to act on the four big issues that mean so many people do not get enough food.

Aid - Enough Food For Everyone IF we give enough aid to stop children dying from hunger and help the poorest families feed themselves.

Tax - Enough Food For Everyone IF governments stop big companies dodging tax in poor countries.

Land - Enough Food For Everyone IF we stop poor farmers being forced off their land and grow crops to feed people, not fuel cars.

Transparency - Enough Food For Everyone IF governments and big companies are honest and open about their actions that stop people getting enough food.
