There are a number of nightmare scenarios on a Friday night out… losing your keys or your wallet, losing your phone, having one too many, feeling down, feeling ill.

But if you have one of these problems in Belper, help probably won’t be too far away as some real-life angels keep watch.

Pictures from our beautiful Chrism Service 2019 at Derby Cathedral, led by Bishop Jan.

The Chrism Service takes place on Maundy Thursday each year. It comprises of the Blessing of the Oils - the ones used for the infirm, in baptisms and ordinations - and a renewal of vows by clergy and readers in the Diocese.

Bishop Libby 3 1500 72 20181215

The Right Reverend Libby Lane will be installed as the eighth Bishop of Derby in a service in Derby Cathedral at 2.30pm on Saturday, 25th May 2019.

The installation will mark the start of Bishop Libby’s ministry in the Diocese of Derby.

The service will see a number of special Church traditions followed: Bishop Libby will be anointed with oil, garlanded with flowers, presented with the Pastoral Staff and vested in the Diocesan cope and mitre.

And, of course, she will be placed for the first time in the cathedra, or bishop’s seat, the symbolic place from where she exercises her ministry.

Youth Council members and people representing churches and chaplaincies from all around the diocese will have roles in the service and there will be a special signed-only reading from Derby Deaf Church.

City Walk

Prior to the service, Bishop Libby will arrive in Derby by train and walk through the city, greeting people of all faiths and none, on her way to the installation service. She will be accompanied by children from local Church of England schools, including Derby Cathedral School, and celebratory flag bearers.

Bishop Libby will be joined by civic dignitaries for the final part of her walk from Market Place to the Cathedral. There, she will watch a short performance by the local branch of the National Liturgical Dance Network.

Shortly before the start of the service, the Cathedral doors will be closed and, again following tradition, Bishop Libby will bang on the door three times with her crozier to gain access to the Cathedral.

At the end of the service, Bishop Libby will stand outside the Cathedral to publicly bless the city of Derby, the county of Derbyshire and the Diocese of Derby.

Derby Cathedral’s Canon for Liturgy, the Revd Richard Andrews, said: “This will be a wonderfully joyous occasion of celebration and prayer as we welcome Bishop Libby.

“But it is also a time for both Bishop Libby and the whole Diocese to renew their commitment as we inaugurate a new phase of ministry in the Diocese of Derby.”

The service will be attended by the Lord-Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Mr William Tucker, the High Sheriff of Derbyshire, William Cavendish, and civic dignitaries, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Derby and members of parliament.

Clergy, lay ministers and church officials and faith leaders from around the Diocese of Derby will be attending and members of the public are also welcome to attend.

Those attending the service will need to be in their seats by 2pm.
