Harvest Appeal 2013 for Chiclayo Peru

The Bishop of Derby, Dr Alastair Redfern has announced that this years’ Harvest Appeal will raise money for a building project in the slums of Peru.

Dr Redfern has worked with The Bishop of Peru, Bishop William Godfrey, who has a family link to Chesterfield, on the project.

The Diocese of Peru has recently acquired a piece of land in the slums of the city of Chiclayo to build vital but missing facilities. The Harvest Appeal 2013 will help to raise the funds necessary to complete the building project named Clinica∙Colegio∙Capilla – clinic, school and church and will help build a new diocesan link with South America.

The shanty towns around the big cities of Peru are home to hundreds of thousands of people. The families live in extreme poverty and lack the basic necessities which we take for granted: running water, electricity, medical care and a balanced diet.

The Harvest Appeal 2013 will be launched on Sunday 28 July at Derby Cathedral at 6 p.m. All are welcome to attend. New special edition signed mugs will be on sale for the first time to raise money for the appeal.

Dr Redfern said: "The Diocese of Peru has a growing mission to improve the lives of the people in the slums and their good work needs resourcing with modern facilities. Peru has one of the highest levels of TB in the southern hemisphere but at present there isn’t a hospital so people of Chiclayo are treated in their own homes by Bishop William’s medical team. Derby Diocese can make a direct impact on the lives of people by supporting the community project.

Bishop William Godfrey, said "Soon after we received the land, Bishop Alistair called me from Derby to ask if we had a project that the people of the Diocese could support. It was a call out of the blue... God's grace at work."
