Youth Minister - Parish of Eyam with Foolow

This is an exciting opportunity to reimagine work with young people and their families in a church community which is learning what it means to have children and young people at the heart of life together.

We are seeking a youth minister with a passion for seeing young people and their families encounter Jesus and grow as lifelong disciples.

This is a key role in our newly formed leadership team, with a strong emphasis on pioneering fresh initiatives that connect with young people and their families both within and beyond the church.

We are looking for a ministry leader to work across the parish who will facilitate the engagement and discipleship of young people during Sunday worship and at other times, and support families in nurturing their children’s faith. Their spirituality should inspire and shape the wider church community, encouraging intergenerational faith development.

Hours - Full Time 37.5 hours per week. Working pattern To include evenings and weekends and subject to change with one full day and 2 part days (which may be combined) off.
Employment type - Three years initially with three-month probationary period.

The Kingdom of God is Good News for All

In 2027, the Diocese of Derby will celebrate 100 years since its formation.

This centenary provides an opportunity to give thanks for the past, celebrate the present, and look to the future with confidence and hope. Through the lens of "A Century of Faith, A Future of Hope", we will reflect on the people, places and stories that have shaped our diocese since 1927, while exploring what God is calling us to be in the years ahead.

The Centenary Programme is a year-long invitation for churches, schools, chaplaincies, worshipping communities, partner organisations and local communities across Derbyshire to take part in ways that are meaningful to their own context. We want every part of the diocesan family to help shape and tell this shared story.

Above all, the centenary sits under our diocesan vision that the Kingdom of God is Good News for All. While we will celebrate our history and heritage, this is about far more than marking an anniversary. It is an opportunity to share the good news of Jesus Christ, celebrate God's faithfulness across generations, and renew our commitment to serving our communities with hope, love and purpose.

 

Meet the Centenary Programme Manager

Hello, I'm Ali Davies-Marsh, the Diocese of Derby's Centenary Programme Manager.

My role is to help coordinate and support the planning of our centenary celebrations, working alongside parishes, schools, Derby Cathedral, chaplaincies, diocesan teams and community partners across Derbyshire.

My hope is that the centenary will help us tell the story of God's faithfulness across the last hundred years while inspiring confidence for the future. We want to celebrate the rich diversity of church life across Derbyshire, create opportunities for people to connect with one another, and ensure that the message of Jesus remains at the heart of everything we do.

Whether you are part of a parish church, a church school, a fresh expression, a chaplaincy, a worshipping community or a local partner organisation, we want you to know that your story matters and has a place within the wider story of our diocese.

 

Our Plans

Planning for the centenary is well underway and we are working to create a programme that is both diocesan in scope and locally meaningful in delivery.

Current areas of work include:

  • Supporting churches and schools to develop their own centenary activities and celebrations.
  • Gathering and sharing stories from across the first 100 years of diocesan life.
  • Working with Derby Cathedral and other partners on significant moments of celebration and reflection.
  • Developing opportunities for service, community engagement and legacy projects.
  • Creating ways for children and young people to play a central role in the celebrations.
  • Building partnerships with civic, voluntary and community organisations across Derbyshire.

We want the centenary to be more than a collection of events. Our aim is that it strengthens relationships, encourages faith, celebrates service, tells the story of God's work in Derbyshire, and helps shape a hopeful future for the next generation.

The Centenary Programme will be strongest when it reflects the breadth, diversity and creativity of the people and communities that make up the Diocese of Derby.

The Acting Bishop of Derby

The Acting Bishop of Derby

The Bishop of Derby, the Rt Revd Libby Lane, is currently on sick leave. Since 1 May 2026 Bishop Libby’s episcopal responsibilities are delegated to the Rt Rev Jackie Searle, Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Coventry, former Bishop of Crediton and previously acting Bishop of Exeter.

Speaking on this appointment, Bishop Jackie said:

“I have been asked to be the Acting Bishop of Derby for this period and will be returning to a diocese that has a very special place in my heart.

“I will be pleased to support the diocese through this time. Meanwhile my prayers and best wishes are with Bishop Libby, and with Bishop Malcolm on his retirement.”

Bishop Jackie is part-time in this role, and will be working closely with the senior team. Throughout this period enquiries should continue to go through the Bishop of Derby’s office as normal. Their standard working hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm.

Director of Music for St Oswald’s, Ashbourne

We are seeking a talented musician, ideally an organist with RCO diploma standard or equivalent, to become our Director of Music at St Oswald’s Church, Ashbourne. Someone who is keen to help us develop our already strong music offering by growing our existing choir, developing a Children’s Choir and potentially starting a Community Choir.

Our dream candidate would be someone willing to work collaboratively with our priest-in-charge to grow and develop our music offering, not just at church but also in the community.

The role would suit a positive, energetic, and creative person with a sound musical background. It would also be desirable if they have experience in leading and encouraging children and young people to take an active part in our church music.

Records Retention and Compliance

The Church of England has recently released a new records retention schedule and accompanying guidance which helps you and your parish ensure best practice when it comes to data compliance:

This schedule (published in 2025) replaces the previous guides on retention, including: Keep or Bin, Cherish or Chuck, Chapter and Verse, and Save and Delete. Your retention policy may need amending considering this new schedule.

It is primarily designed for use by the following: Cathedrals, Minsters, Bishops Offices, Diocesan Offices (Including DBF’s DBE’s), Archdeacons, Deaneries, and Parishes of the Church of England.

 

Why should you use this schedule?

The schedule sets out how long records should be retained for, and the justification for that retention and what the disposal action should be. It was developed in consultation with a range of stakeholders from across the Church of England. It provides best practice for applying retention and disposition of records held by church bodies.

  • • It is far more comprehensive than the previous schedules
  • • It provides defensible reasons for retaining, archiving and destroying records
  • • It should give you confidence that you can destroy records at the appropriate time
  • • It supports the requirements of Data Protection Legislation
  • • It supports good record keeping practices

Please note that this is a living document and so it will be regularly revised and updated as the need arises, for example to include new records, or when legislation or business practice changes. Keep an eye out for further guidance notes being released in the coming months

Vacancy in See Committee

About the Vacancy In See Committee

This is a statutory committee, serving for a three-year term, who only meet when there is a Vacancy in See.
Meaning, in the case of the Diocese of Derby, if the post of the Bishop of Derby were to become vacant, then the Vacancy in See committee would meet. 

  • Members don’t need to be on any other committee, synod or be a PCC member.
  • Members do need to be on an electoral roll or be a clerk in holy orders within the Diocese*

Should a Vacancy in See arise, Members would then meet to identify the needs of the Diocese and work with the Crown Nominations Commission of the General Synod, to identify the next Diocesan Bishop.

This process is governed by The Vacancy in See Committees Regulation 2024. The General Synod makes the Regulation, which is a Consolidation Instrument within the meaning of Standing Order 71(9) of the General Synod.

Any cleric beneficed in the Diocese or licensed under seal by the Bishop of Derby is eligible for election by members of the House of Clergy of the Diocesan Synod, except that no archdeacon and no person in Episcopal orders is eligible to be elected in this election. (The election involves the whole House of Clergy of the Diocesan Synod. This means that a person from one Area/archdeaconry can be proposed, seconded and be voted for by persons from another).

Any lay person who is an actual communicant, as defined in Church Representation Rule 83(2), and whose name is entered on the electoral roll of a parish in the Diocese is eligible for election by the House of Laity of the Diocesan Synod. (The election involves the whole House of Laity. This means that a person from one Area/archdeaconry can be proposed, seconded and voted for by persons from another).

Electoral Roll 2026

In every parish there must be a church electoral roll (referred to in the Church Representation Rules as ‘the roll’) on which the names of lay persons are entered.  The roll of a parish must be revised annually, except in a year in which a new roll is prepared (last prepared in 2025).

Revision the Electoral Roll: preparation

  • Each Parish should have one Electoral Roll, even if there is more than one place of worship within the Parish
  • At least 14 days before the proposed revision takes places, a notice must remain on display 
  • Revision of the Roll is completed not less than 15 days or more than 28 days before the APCM
  • After the Roll is revised, no names to be added or removed until after the APCM
  • The APCM must be held in the period 1 January and 31 May
  • Number certified includes members of daughter or district churches

Publication of the Revised Roll:

  • Each Parish must display the revised roll (every name - no other personal data), electronic or otherwise, for at least 14 days
  • Make a copy of the roll available for inspection (on a reasonable request)

Who can Apply:

  • Anyone that has moved into the parish
  • Anyone that has joined the church
  • Anyone that has turned 16 (since the last revision of the Roll)
  • When someone leaves the Parish and the name is removed from the Electoral Roll, a notice should be sent to their new parish
  • When someone applies to be added to the Electoral Roll, a notice should be sent to their former Parish Electoral Roll Officer
